September 2012 Newsletter

Dear Friends:

The new Previews catalog has arrived and features the comics and product due to begin arriving in October and November.

Some of the codes and abbreviations that I use are: HC (hard cover), TP (trade paperback), SC (soft cover), GN (graphic novel), MMPB (mass market paperback), AF (action figure) T/S (tee shirt) and ☼(an excellent writer, creator or title deserving wider recognition in my humble opinion).

Below I’ll list all of the most popular writers and artists and their current projects but first I’ll go through the publishers and point out anything new or noteworthy that may not be included in the lists below.

Remember that many of these items will ship in November so keep gift giving in mind, as a lot of Christmas themed products are here.

DARK HORSE: Mike Richardson, founder and head of the company has adapted Japan’s enduring ‘national legend’ ☼47 RONIN #1 OF 5 illustrated by Stan (‘Usagi Yojimbo’) Sakai with editorial consultant Kazuo (‘Lone Wolf & Cub’) Koike. This is the Pick of the Month this time.R.I.P.D.: CITY OF THE DAMNED #1 OF 4 is a prequel to the upcoming film starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges, a cowboy versus demons in the wild west tale with art by Tony Parker. COLDER #1 OF 4 is written by Paul Tobin with art by Juan Ferreyra, the team behind the ‘Falling Skies’ comic; this is a brutal and graphic horror story. Richard Corben adapts and illustrates EDGAR ALLAN POE’S THE CONQUEROR WORM in a black and white one shot comic. THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: HYRULE HISTORIA HC is a collection of historical information, never seen concept art, the history of Hyrule, chronology of the games and the history of Link’s adventures from the creators.

DC: You’ll notice that there are a few events going on at DC that are affecting characters and continuity throughout their universe. The ‘Rotworld’ story in ‘Swamp Thing’ and ‘Animal Man’ is also influencing Deadman, Beast Boy, Poison Ivy and the cast of ‘Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. while the ‘Death of the Family’ is spreading through many of the Gotham and Bat-related titles as well as ‘Suicide Squad’, the ‘Hawkman: Wanted’ story is going to have an effect in ‘Green Arrow’ and ‘Deathstroke’ and the ‘Rise of the Third Army’ is being told through four issues of the four ‘Lantern’ titles. Also the ‘H’el on Earth’ story runs through SUPERGIRL, SUPERBOY and SUPERMAN #14 and guest stars the Teen Titans. That’s the cross over news; DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS #14 is an adventure with Black Lighting and Blue Devil in L.A. Written by Marc Andreyko with art by Robson Rohca. BATMAN-ARKHAM CITY:END GAME #1 is a sixty four page one shot written by Derek Fridolfs with art by Jason Shawn Alexander based on events from the video game covering the final battle between Batman and the Joker. Derek also writes BATMAN: ARKHAM UNHINGED #8; these video game titles are all ‘digital first’ stories coming to print for their ‘hard copy’ debuts. LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #2 is by B. Clay Moore with art by Ben Templesmith, more ‘digital first’ stories. The ☼ABSOLUTE TOP 10 HC gives the deluxe treatment to the great stories of the law enforcement department of the future written by Alan Moore with art by Gene Ha, the best work that Alan did at his ‘America’s Best Comics’ imprint in my opinion.

IDW: Tying in with their launch of a new ongoing ‘Judge Dredd’ title, IDW is also releasing JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE BRIAN BOLLAND HC with all of John Wagner’s stories that were illustrated by the incomparable Bolland, who you know from the current covers of ‘Dial H’ and who drew ‘Batman: The Killing Joke’. A new, all ages fantasy series from J. M. DeMatteis, creator of ‘Abadazad’ arrives as THE ADVENTURES OF AUGUSTA WIND #1 OF 5 with art by Vassilis Gogtzilas. Bronies will be very excited about the new MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC #1, shipping with six covers featuring one cover for each of the ‘Mane Six’ (or available as a boxed set with all six covers) written by Katie Cook with art by Andy Price. BORDERLANDS: ORIGINS #1 OF 4 reveals the untold origins and tells how the Vault Hunters got on the bus with Marcus in the first place. Star Wars horror novelist Joe Schreiber (‘Red Harvest’, ‘Death Troopers’) has his novel, a supernatural thriller, being adapted to comics as CHASING THE DEAD #1 OF 4 by Matthew Scott and Tim Westland with art by Dietrich Smith. Enrique Sanchez Abuli’s darkly humorous 1930’s crime tales illustrated by legendary artists Jordi Bernet and Alex Toth are offered from the beginning as ☼TORPEDO: VOLUME #1.

IMAGE: Joe Harris begins a new series, ☼GREAT PACIFIC #1 with art by Martin Morazzo, a tale of a rich young heir who decides to try and solve the environmental disaster twice the size of Texas know as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Todd DeZago begins his third adventure, this one in Australia with artist Craig Rousseau, PERHAPANAUTS: DANGER DOWN UNDER #1 OF 5. Jonathan Luna, one of the brothers responsible for ‘Ultra’, ‘Girls’ and ‘Sword’ wrote and illustrated his first solo project, STAR BRIGHT AND THE LOOKING GLASS HC, an oversize, all age original fairy tale book of prose with 33 full page watercolor illustrations.

MARVEL: I’ve covered most of this months’ new number one issues from Marvel; they plan on releasing one new first issue per week for fifty weeks. I didn’t mention that the first issues all have variant covers, six for Indestructible Hulk, five (so far) for All New X-Men, six for Iron Man, seven for Thor: God of Thunder, six for Captain America, four for X-Men Legacy and six for Fantastic Four. DEADPOOL #1 will be written by Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn with art by Tony Moore with a great (regular) cover by Geoff Darrow (!) and four variants. JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #646 begins a new arc with a new creative team, Kathryn Immonen writes and Valerio Schiti provides pencils for the tale of Sif: The Berzerker. The MARVEL’S IRON MAN II ADAPTATION #1 OF 2 is written by Will Pilgrim with an artist yet to be determined. Many of the first issue covers (and some of the variant covers) are offered as posters as well. Ask when you stop by the shop and I’ll show you the pictures. By the way, as you read listings by artists you’ll see a lot of conflicting information. I apologize; Marvel often gives we retailers either incorrect or no information about their comics which, as you might imagine, makes it much harder for us to place our orders intelligently.

INDEPENDENTS: AMAZE INK offers a new JOHNNY THE HOMOCIDAL MANIAC TEE SHIRT, the first in almost seventeen years. ANDREWS McMEEL offers ☼THE COMPLETE CALVIN & HOBBES SLIPCASE EDITION SOFTCOVER for a hundred bucks; four volumes that will be read in any household for generations. ARCHAIA ENTERTAINMENT offers ☼A TALE OF SAND HC an original graphic novel adaptation of an unproduced feature length screenplay written by Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl that has won three Eisner Awards. ARSENIC LULLABYoffers the ARSENIC LULLABY PULP EDITION, a fifty six page collection of Douglas Paszkiewicz’ work which has received Eisner and Harvey nominations; the comic is called ‘The King of Dark Humor’. BANTAM has A GAME OF THRONES: VOLUME #2 GN, a hard cover collecting issues seven through twelve of the projected twenty four issue series. BIG DOG INK has the ☼ELECTRIC YOUTH SPECIAL, a one shot written by Tucson’s own Eric (‘Thor: The Unkillable Thunder Christ’) Esquivel. And that’s the new things from publishers that aren’t included in the lists below which are alphabetized by creator, author and/or artist. If there’s a series that you feel is superior to others check the authors’ name and try something else by him or her. You may have favorite comic characters but it’s the writers and artists that make them rise above the average. And, of course if you have a favorite creator that isn’t included below please let me know; I write this to help you make your choices and selections. It’s your newsletter so let me know what you’d like to see!

Rich with the art of Mike Norton continuing adventures of characters created by Mike. Mike also has a new poster from Marvel: FF BY MIKE ALLRED POSTER NOW, an amusing concept which will also be one of the variant covers for the first issue.

ANDREWS: Mixed messages from Marvel; they tell me that Kaare writes one of the two stories in A PLUS X #2 and that the second story is written by Peter David but they also tell me that the comic will be written by Warren Ellis and Jeph Loeb and that one of the stories will have Dale Keown’s art and the other will have art by TBD (to be determined). One of the stories is Spider-Man and Beast versus zombies and the other is Kitty Pride, Lockheed and Iron Man versus the Brood. (I’ve contacted Marvel and apparently the Spider-Man /Beast tale will be written and illustrated by Kaare while the Iron Man/Kitty Pride story will be Peter David with Mike Del Mundo’s artwork; no Ellis or Loeb.)

ARCUDI: John writes CREEP #3 with the art of Jonathan Case and, in collaboration with Mike Mignola he writes B.P.R.D.: 1948 #2 OF 5 with the art of Max Fiumara and B.P.R.D.: HELL ON EARTH-RETURN OF THE MASTER #4 OF 5 with Tyler Crook’s art.

Antony also writes BLUE BEETLE #14 with J. P. Mayer inking Ig Guara’s pencils.

BEECHEN: Adam writes the Dark Knight story in BATMAN BEYOND UNLIMITED #10 with Norm Breyfogle’s artwork; backups include ‘Superman Beyond’ and more.

BENDIS: Another confusing listing from Marvel says that AVENGERS ASSEMBLE #9 is by Bendis and Bagley but it also say (and I think that this is correct) that the issue is actually by Kelly Sue DeConnick with Stefano Caselli’s art and the story is a race between Tony Stark and Bruce Banner to see who can find a missing scientist first. AVENGERS #33 and #34 are written by Brian with art by Mike Mayhew and these issues end the arc, the series and Bendis’ long run on the title. NEW AVENGERS #33 and #34 also end the series with both issues featuring Carlos Pacheco’s art and introducing a new sorcerer supreme. In collected editions the AVENGERS BY BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS PREMIERE HC #4 features the art of Walter Simonson and NEW AVENGERS BY BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS TP #3 has the tale leading to the ‘AVX’ cross over which features the art of Neal Adams and Mike Deodato, Jr. if I remember correctly (and don’t ask me why Marvel has listed the writer and artist as TBD when Bendis’ name is right in the title).

BRUBAKER: The ☼SCENE OF THE CRIME DELUXE HC, Ed’s first work with Michael Lark and with inks by Sean Phillips is a crime noir story predating ‘Gotham Central’ and ‘Criminal’. At Marvel Ed continues on WINTER SOLDIER #13 with the art of Butch Guice, the CAPTAIN AMERICA BY ED BRUBAKER TP #2 features the art of Alan Davis (although Marvel says the artist is TBD), and the WINTER SOLDIER TP #2: BROKEN ARROW is illustrated by Michael Lark.

VENOM #27.1 deals with the aftermath (and, although Marvel tells me Declan Shalvey is the artist I believe it’s actually Thony Silas). Cullen continues on CAPTAIN AMERICA AND BLACK WIDOW #639 fighting Lizard-Ock with Francesco Francavilla’s artwork.

CAREY: Mike continues his hit Vertigo title with UNWRITTEN #43 with Peter Gross’ art and guest starring Baron Muchausen, a Jane Austen Heroine, a homicidal bear and three bad rabbits; tell me you’re not intrigued.

CLOWES: Daniel will be involved with the art design of BARNABY HC #1 OF 5 collecting all of Crockett Johnson’s newspaper strips from the 1940’s although he’s probably best remembered for his childrens’ books that began with ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’.

COOKE: Darwyn’s award winning and brilliant adaptations of the early noir novels of Donald E. Westlake under the pseudonym of Richard Parker have been incredible and highly recommended. He’s done three so far and plans to continue releasing one per year. They’ve been coming out in hard cover but ☼PARKER: THE HUNTER SC is the first one and will now be available in the more affordable format from IDW. CREATOR OWNED HEROES #6 in addition to the two ongoing tales and the interviews and articles will now feature graphic strips and material by Darwyn every month.

CORNELL: Paul writes DEMON KNIGHTS #14 with the art of Bernard Chang at DC and his own SAUCER COUNTRY #9 at Vertigo with Ryan Kelly’s art as the timely tale has Arcadia about to cinch the Democratic nomination as the Presidential candidate (if no one finds out about her close encounter).

COSTA: Mike along with Christos N. Gage wrote the material collected in the over sized G.I. JOE: COBRA-LAST LAUGH HC which has art by Antonio Fuso and others and Mike and Antonio continue with COBRA ONGOING #19.

DeCONNICK: Kelly Sue continues the long awaited return in GHOST #2 from Dark Horse with art by Phil Noto. Kelly Sue co-writes the ‘Castle’ television program with Brian Michael Bendis so it’s no surprise that she’s writing AVENGERS ASSEMBLE #9 now that Brian has finished his run on the title. Mark Bagley also left the title with Brian and is replaced by Stefano Caselli. In Kelly Sue’s CAPTAIN MARVEL #7 the Captain fights former Captain Marvel Monica Rambeau illustrated by Emma Rios while the first six issues are collected as CAPTAIN MARVEL TP #1: IN PURSUIT OF FLIGHT with art by Dexter Soy.

DeFALCO: Tom writes SUPERBOY #14 spinning out of ‘Superman’ #13 and guest starring Supergirl and the Teen Titans parts of the ‘H’el On Earth’ arc with Rob Lean providing inks to R. B. Silva’s pencil art plus LEGION LOST #14 which guest stars Superboy and the Ravagers and has the art of Pete Woods. ELLIS: Warren is one contributor to THOUGHT BUBBLE ANTHOLOGY 2012 #2, a collection of new short stories for the UK’s ‘Thought Bubble Festival’ held in Leeds; all proceeds from sales of the comic go to the charity Barnardo’s. Warren’s now completed digital series gets the deluxe treatment in the ☼FREAKANGELS COMPLETE COLLECTED SLIPCASE EDITION featuring all six volumes as illustrated by Paul Duffield and priced at ninety nine ninety nine. Also the TRANSMETROPOLITAN: ALL AROUND THE WORLD ART BOOK HC is a tribute to that classic dystopian series featuring Cliff Chiang, Darick Robertson, Fiona Staples, Camilla d’Erico, Milo Manara, Dean Motter and many other of today’s top talents; this one if fifty bucks.

Garth begins a new war story with BATTLEFIELDS: GREEN FIELDS BEYOND, PART ONE #1 OF 6, the third ‘Battlefields’ tale, this one features the art of Carlos Ezquerra and takes place in 1951 Korea. (The previous series, in 2005 was a five part limited series and the one before that, in 2001 also lasted twelve issues and continued as ‘The Order’ which was canceled after six issues. The last successful launch of this team was the one that ended in 1986.) Matt writes HAWKEYE #4 with artist Javier Pulido as S.H.I.E.L.D. recruits Clint(?). Kieron also writes JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #646 with Stephanie Hans’ art (or else a new story featuring Sif begins written by Kathryn Immonen with the art of Valerio Schiti’s art; Marvel tells me both but I suspect the latter is the correct information). The JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY TP #4: MANCHESTER GODS collects the story including the ‘Mighty Thor Annual’ by J. M. Dematteis featuring Silver Surfer and Galactus with the art of Richard Elson.

Also at Boom!, HIGHER EARTH #7 begins a new arc with Francesco Biagini’s art and the same team is on the collected edition, HIGHER EARTH TP #1.

HURWITZ: Best selling crime novelist Gregg Hurwitz has rescued the wobbly start of this series into a solid addition to the Dark Knight’s exploits and the hyper detailed and gritty art style of David Finch certainly doesn’t hurt; in BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #14 our hero has been trapped and tortured by the Scarecrow and now it’s time for payback.

JOHNS: Geoff writes JUSTICE LEAGUE #14 with Tony S. Daniel’s art, the second chapter of the tale leading to the ‘Trinity Wars’ and AQUAMAN #14 with art by Ardian Syaf featuring the debut of Ocean Master.
