October 2015 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

The October Previews catalog is not sitting on the desk at the shop as usual, as the monopolistic distributor that I do business with apparently forgot to ship them. Hopefully they’ll show up sometime in the next week but I’m not holding my breath. I’ve downloaded the order form in a digital format so I don’t actually have any artwork to reference, but I will try to point out the new and notable items that I think might interest you as best as I can with the materials at hand.

These solicitations are for comics and products that will begin shipping in December of 2015. If there’s anything that you’d like please try and let me know by the twenty first of this month so I can be sure to have enough copies on hand to fill your requests and subscription orders. (And think of the holidays; I know it’s early but come December you’ll be glad that you thought ahead.)

Some of the codes and abbreviations that I use are: HC (hard cover), TP (trade paperback), SC (soft cover), GN (graphic novel), OGN (original graphic novel-not a reprint or collection), MMPB (mass market paperbacks), AF (action figure), T/C trading cards, T/S (tee shirt) and(to denote an excellent writer, creator or title deserving wider recognition in my humble opinion).

Besides the monthly Previews catalog there is also an ‘Adult Supplement’ which showcases the ‘adults only’ comics, books and videos. If you are interested in seeing what’s available (and you’re over eighteen) just send me an email and I will send you this month’s adult catalog with images, descriptions and prices.

While I like to be able to recommend a first issue of a new series as the best recommendation each month, this month I just have to give the Pick of the Month
distinction to the collected edition of Brian K. Vaughan’s web comic, the PRIVATE EYE DELUXE EDITION HC. You can read it online here:
http://panelsyndicate.com/, where you can pay what you’d like, but personally I’m going to enjoy having it in the ‘hard copy’ format. And I suspect that there will be a more affordable soft cover edition offered at some point in the future.

As I mentioned at the beginning, I haven’t received copies of this months’ Previews catalog, so I wrote the newsletter this month by searching the internet for publishers and title information. I’ve reached the end of this months’ comic book solicitations. Other products featured in the catalog each month include sections of books, magazines, trading cards, apparel, toys and collectibles, import toys and models, novelties, statues, action figures and games. All the Star Wars stuff, the Funko pop figures, lots of merchandise that I’m happy to order for you, so feel free to look through the catalog and see what’s there. You could do a bunch of holiday shopping that way and just pick up your selections in December.

Lots of things going on in the shop and in the comics community over the next few weeks so here’s a short event calendar:

Image Comics will release SAINTS #1, written by award winning playwright and actor Sean Lewis and beautifully illustrated (I want to say ‘illuminated’) by artist BEN MACKEY. Ben will be at Charlie’s Comic Books for the SAINTS RELEASE PARTY. He will autograph your copies and, because Ben is such a good guy he insisted on raising some money for charity so he produced a beautiful work of original art featuring St. Jude. It’s hanging up in the shop now but someone will take it home on October seventh by placing the winning bid in the silent auction with all proceeds to benefit, of course, the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital!

On SATURDAY, the THIRTY FIRST OF OCTOBER, which is Halloween, there will be an all day event; there will be free Halloween themed comics, there will be a group of comic artists who will draw free sketches for you, there will be original art with a Halloween theme that you could own through the silent auction and there will be a raffle to win action figures and graphic novels and all the proceeds will benefit the TUCSON COMMUNITY FOOD BANK. I’ll gladly accept donations of food but, as the Food Bank can buy about three times as much food as you or I with the same amount of money I encourage cash contributions if possible.

OCTOBER TWENTY FIRST has been declared BACK TO THE FUTURE DAY and we’ll see what that will bring. You can follow developments here: http://www.backtothefuture.com/news-events

NOVEMBER SIXTH through NOVEMBER EIGHTH is the TUCSON COMIC CON and you can register and read all about it here: http://www.tucsoncomic-con.com/

The TWENTY EIGHT of NOVEMBER is LOCAL COMIC SHOP DAY sponsored by ComicsPro which is kind of a retailers group. You can see what’s planned on their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/LocalComicShopDay

And I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to all of you for your orders, purchases and support of my little one man comic shop; your support keeps the lights on and keeps my family fed and I’m very grateful to you all, not just for the money that you spend here, but also for the friendship and the trust. I’m honored to help you keep your collection up to date, to discuss the stories and creators and to be able to share your interests. Thank you all. See you soon!
