October 2014 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

The October Previews catalog is sitting on the desk here, available for your perusal when you stop by. Meanwhile I will try to point out the new and notable items that I think might interest you.

These solicitations are for comics and products that will begin shipping in December. If there’s anything that you’d like please try and let me know by the twenty first of the month so I can be sure to have enough copies on hand to fill your requests and subscription orders.

Some of the codes and abbreviations that I use are: HC (hard cover), TP (trade paperback), SC (soft cover), GN (graphic novel), OGN (original graphic novel-not a reprint or collection), MMPB (mass market paperbacks), AF (action figure), T/C (trading cards, T/S (tee shirt) and
(to denote an excellent writer, creator or title deserving wider recognition in my humble opinion).

Besides the monthly Previews catalog there is also an ‘Adult Supplement’ which showcases the ‘adults only’ comics, books and videos. If you are interested in seeing what’s available (and you’re over eighteen) just send me an email and I will send you this month’s adult catalog in a .pdf format with images, descriptions and prices.

The theme this month is Science Fiction/Fantasy, as if, with the success of SAGA and the subsequent multiple science fiction titles like MANHATTAN PROJECTS, BLACK SCIENCE, LOW, COPPERHEAD, PROMETHEUS, etc. and all of the fantasy titles like ELFQUEST: THE FINAL QUEST, EYE OF NEWT, etc. we need such a focus, but with the Z Nation launching this past September twelfth and the new season of THE WALKING DEAD on the twelfth of October I can understand the trend.

I hope that you’re all set for Halloween and that you placed orders for any items you’re hoping to get or give as gifts for the upcoming holiday season. Stop by the shop with the kids and I’ll be giving out Halloween comics (and I’d love to see the kids costumes, and the grown ups too). Meanwhile here’s what’s new an notable in the new catalog beginning with the five premiere publishers.

DARK HORSE: With twenty years of the ever expanding Mignola Universe completed it’s time for some of the many spin offs to reconnect and they do in HELLBOY AND THE B.P.R.D. #1 of 5 written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi with the art of Alex Maleev while B.P.R.D.-HELL ON EARTH, VOL. 10: THE DEVIL’S WINGS TP collects issues one hundred twenty through one hundred twenty four and ABE SAPIEN #18 begins a new five part arc written by Mignola and Scott Allie with art by Max Fiumara. The acclaimed continuations of the animated series with three digest volumes in each arc are being collected in full size forty dollar editions and the third is offered in AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER-THE RIFT, LIBRARY EDITION HC; with the two previous volumes in the series being ‘The Promise’ and ‘The Search’. HALO: ESCALATION #13 begins a new arc and THE COMPLETE ELFQUEST, VOL. 2 TP collects the eight issue Siege at Blue Mountain and the nine part Kings of the Broken Wheel stories.

By the way, the variant covers from DC this month, which I try to order in equal quantities with the regular covers to offer you a choice, will all be by the brilliant Darwyn Cooke this month. The ‘Godhead’ story running through all six of the Green Lantern books crosses into INFINITY MAN AND THE FOREVER PEOPLE #6 as Simon Baz battles a Mecha Darkseid. BATMAN ETERNAL #35 of the weekly series begins the third arc of this story which has maintained a breakneck pace since the beginning and, if you’re not already on board, here’s an opportunity to jump on as the GCPD has beaten Batman. BATMAN #37 as well as the BATMAN ANNUAL #3 are both part of the ‘Endgame’ arc, a story so secret that all we know is the title (but it’s still Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo so you know it will be excellent). Can that really be Barbara Gordon in BATGIRL #37, doing photo ops and wearing sequins? The GRAYSON ANNUAL #1 reveals the secret origin of Helena Bertinelli and Batman vs. Darkseid in BATMAN AND ROBIN #37 and the story concludes in ROBIN RISES: ALPHA #1, so who is the new Robin? There’s a serial killer taking out inmates in ARKHAM MANOR #3 and see what detention is like in GOTHAM ACADEMY #3. A double dose of mayhem as Harley teams up with Power Girl in HARLEY QUINN #13 and the HARLEY QUINN HOLIDAY SPECIAL #1 featuring a collection of short stories all written by Amanda and Jimmy. (I can’t remember which comic I was reading when Fifty Sue called Power Girl ‘Boob Window’ recently, but it cracked me up, so I had to share in case you missed it.) The big cross over with the Corps and the New Gods, ‘Godhead’, runs through GREEN LANTERN #37, GREEN LANTERN CORPS #37, GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #37, RED LANTERNS #8 and concludes in the GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #3.     IDW: As I’ve mentioned before Idea & Design Works really likes to mash up their licensed properties and this month, in partnership with BOOM! IDW also distributes books from the Library of American Comics and this month begins a run of twelve volumes collecting the masterworks of Hugo Pratt with CORTO MALTESE: UNDER THE SIGN OF CAPRICORN TP. Also I have to mention THE GHOUL TREASURY EDITION featuring the original story by Steve Niles with the incredible brush work of Bernie Wrightson in this oversize seventy two page black and white comic for under ten dollars.

IMAGE: Once a haven for disgruntled Marvel artists, Image is now deserving of the old Marvel sobriquet as the ‘House of Ideas’ attracting all the most inventive of the creators who get to own their products and reap the profits of film and licensed products previously only available to the corporate publishers. Kelly Sue (Pretty Deadly, Castle) DeConnick offers BITCH PLANET #1 with art by Valentine DeLandro, an adventure involving women in prison and full of interesting science fiction concepts. RUMBLE #1 is written by John (B.P.R.D.) Arcudi with the art of James Harren, described as ‘Louis C.K. meets Robert E. Howard in a David Fincher universe’, a modern day fantasy thriller involving an unhappy Scarecrow Warrior God. GRAVEYARD SHIFT #1 OF 4 is by Jay Faerber and Fran Bueno who worked together on the Noble Causes series; this is a crime/horror story with a homicide detective stumbling onto a gang of vampires. THEY’RE NOT LIKE US #1 launches a new ongoing series written by Eric (Nowhere Men) Stephenson with the art of Simon Gane, a story of youth, abilities and choice. EAST OF WEST #16 begins ‘The Apocalypse: Year Two’ in an oversized issue that’s a good jumping on point in case you’re not already reading this tale of the Great Beast and the Four Horsemen in America. SHUTTER #7 and THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #6 both begin new arcs as well. The SUNSTONE OGN is an erotic romantic comedy written and illustrated by Stjepan Sejic and collected editions this month include BLACK SCIENCE, VOL. 2: WELCOME, NOWHERE TP, CASANOVA, VOL. 3: AVARITIA-THE COMPLETE EDITION HC, DARK ENGINE, VOL. 1: THE ART OF DESTRUCTION TP, DREAM POLICE, VOL. 1 TP, DRUMHELLAR, VOL. 2: DOGS AND GODS TP, GHOSTED, VOL. 3 TP, MANIFEST DESTINY, VOL. 2 TP, MORNING GLORIES, VOL. 1 COMPENDIUM TP collecting issues one through thirty eight, OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA, VOL. 1 TP for under ten bucks, the POWERS SCRIPTBOOK TP, RED CITY TP, SAGA, VOL. 4 TP, SAVAGE DRAGON: A NEW BEGINNING TP, SEX CRIMINALS, VOL. 2: TWO WORLDS, ONE COP TP, SOVEREIGN TP, STRAY BULLETS, VOL. 6: KILLERS TP and a twentieth anniversary edition of Bob Fingerman’s race and gender swapping social satire comes back in print: WHITE LIKE SHE TP. Also the WALKING DEAD 2015 CALENDAR is offered.

MARVEL: As the current universe spanning cross over, ‘Axis’ continues, the Astonishing Avengers battle the Uncanny X-Men for the fate of New York and chapters this month include AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #7, #8 and #9 OF 9, AXIS: REVOLUTIONS #3 and #4 OF 4, AXIS: HOBGOBLIN #3 OF 3 and AXIS: CARNAGE #3 OF 3 and the issues tying into the cross over include: LOKI: AGENT OF ASGARD #9, NOVA #25, AVENGERS WORLD #16, ALL NEW X-FACTOR #17 and #18, DEADPOOL #38 and #39, AMAZING X-MEN #14, INHUMAN #9 and #10, CAPTAIN AMERICA & THE MIGHTY AVENGERS #3 and SUPERIOR IRON MAN #3 bringing the Axis series up to forty two issues, which isn’t too bad; (Infinity had fifty four and Original Sin will have fifty two once the Annual arrives). ANGELA: ASGARD’S ASSASSIN #1 is written by Kieron Gillen and Marguerite Bennett with art by Phil Jimenez and Stephanie Hans. S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 will be written by Mark Waid and the first issue will be illustrated by Carlos Pacheco with a different artist for each subsequent issue and this will be Phil Coulson leading, not Nick Fury; it seems that it will be closer to the current television program then to the agencies’ comic book history. The CAPTAIN AMERICA: PEGGY CARTER, AGENT OF S.H.I.E.L.D. one shot collects over a hundred pages of stories originally published between 1959 and 2011 featuring Agent Carter as an introduction to followers of the TV show. The AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1 has a story by Sean Ryan and Brandon Peterson and another by Jai Nitz and Ron Salas with no Spider-Verse connections, just Peter Parker stories in the 616 universe. Now that Wolverine is dead again (or will be soon, as deadlines have been missed) the Jean Grey Academy needs a new staff member; SPIDER-MAN AND THE X-MEN #1 fits the bill, I guess; the series will be written by Elliott Kalan with art by Marco Failla. Meanwhile the other bug books are tied into the Spider-Verse including AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #11 and #12, SPIDER-MAN 2099 #7, SPIDER-WOMAN #2, SPIDER-VERSE TEAM-UP #2 OF 3 and SCARLET SPIDERS #2 OF 3. DEATH OF WOLVERINE: LOGAN’S LEGACY #6 and #7 OF 7 and the DEATH OF WOLVERINE: THE WEAPON X PROGRAM #3 and #4 OF 5 brings us almost to the end of the grieving period. MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS #1 OF 2 is the adaptation of the film which brings us to the Time Runs Out cross over which will tie into AVENGERS #39 and NEW AVENGERS #28 this month, with five more months to go. AVENGERS NOW! Is a one shot in the style of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and will include all the new members, enemies and allies. If you Venom fans aren’t already aware GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #22 is part three of the Planet of the Symbiotes tale by Brian Michael Bendis and Valerio Schiti. In MOON KNIGHT #10 our hero breaks into the United Nations Building as written by Brian Wood with the art of Greg Smallwood; the transition from writer Warren Ellis to Brian Wood was virtually seamless. The MIRACLEMAN ANNUAL #1 will contain a story by Grant Morrison illustrated by Joe Quesada and a new ‘classic’ story by Peter Milligan and Mike Allred. FANTASTIC FOUR #14 has the team searching for Reed while the All New Invaders search for the missing children of the Future Foundation and Valeria returns to America. THANOS VS HULK #1 OF 4 will be written and illustrated by Jim Starlin and BLACK WIDOW #13 has the rare distinction of lasting past one year with the same artist, Phil Noto and writer, Nathan Edmondson. In ALL NEW X-MEN #36 the team battles the Ultimate X-Men (so whose side is Miles Morales on?) and in UNCANNY X-MEN #29 Charles Xavier’s last will and testament is finally revealed, both X-titles by Brian Michael Bendis and he also writes the ALL NEW X-MEN ANNUAL #1 and the UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL #1 which is a two part story telling the secret life of Eva Bell, both issues illustrated by Andrea Sorrentino. With the imminent release of the Powers television program coming to Sony Playstation this December POWERS #1 starts anew, more goodness from Brian Bendis.     INDEPENDENTS: I wasn’t sure but I was hoping that it wasn’t a one shot and, sure enough ABSTRACT STUDIOS is offering Terry Moores’ SIP KIDS #2, the Strangers in Paradise cast in all age adventures as small kids with more than a nod and a wink to the Peanuts gang. The latest arc in Terry’s current Eisner nominated horror series, coming to a screen near you soon is collected in RACHEL RISING, VOL. 5 TP. HERALD: LOVECRAFT AND TESLA #1 OF 3 is from ACTION LAB and involves Amelia Earhart’s transatlantic flight and, of course, Cthulhu’s Herald. Also HOLY F***! #1 is offered, featuring a sleazy naked Jesus smoking meth in a seedy Tokyo karaoke bar teaming up with a nun and Satan to try to stop humanity’s mythological gods from messing things up. I suspect that anyone who picked up the first issue in April of last year will have probably outgrown it by the time that SESAME STREET #2 arrives next January from APE ENTERTAINMENT but hopefully it will find a new audience. All right, this is BIG, possibly the greatest comic writer in history returns to monthly comics. Yes. Alan Moore. AVATAR PRESS offers CROSSED + 100 #1. When Garth Ennis created the Crossed series, which currently comes out twice a month and is past it’s sixtieth issue, it was a comic for people who found the Walking Dead too tame; a post apocalyptic tale of a virus that, well, brought out the worst in those affected. Over the top violence has been the hallmark of the series, to the point where I’ve heard some of the stories referred to as ‘torture porn’. Alan has advanced the story to one hundred years past the original inception of the outbreak. It’s a free standing series with no need to have read any of the previous issues, it will have multiple covers, like all of Avatar’s offerings including leather covers, 9.8 CGC graded editions, boxed sets including a copy autographed by Alan, art prints, a poster, etc. One week before the first issue arrives there will be the CROSSED + 100 #1 TASTE TEST, a three dollar preview to be followed by the regular four dollar issue. There will also be a six dollar bagged edition each month, due to the graphic imagery of the cover. While the regular ongoing series has gotten beyond the point of disturbing, I feel that the intelligence, imagination and skill that Alan will bring to the series will make it something different and special. The art will be by Gabriel (Ferals) Andrade and, although it will be unsuitable for many readers and I wouldn’t sell it to anyone who is underage, this is my Pick of the Month
for October. BOB BURDEN STUDIOS releases the PANDEMONIUM BLVD. HC, signed and numbered, a full color two hundred and fifty page art book under a Dave Stevens cover for fifty bucks, featuring over a hundred never before seen Flaming Carrot pieces including the first drawing ever. BONGO COMICS has a new one shot, McBAIN #1 featuring the muscle bound strongman turned action star Rainier Wolfcastle. BOOM! STUDIOS launches ETERNAL #1 OF 4 by William Harms and Giovanni Valetta, a science fiction tale where the ease of making clones makes the race virtually immortal. ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK #1 will be written by Christopher Sebela with Diego Baretto’s art as the company adds another John Carpenter title to their successful Big Trouble in Little China series. Their ARCHAIA imprint solicits ROCKET SALVAGE #1 OF 6 by animator Yehudi Mercado with artist Bachan, a dysfunctional family drama surrounding three clones running a rocket ship repair shop complete with spaceport street-racing and alien gangsters. Their ‘alternative’ imprint, BOOM! BOX begins an anthology with the BOOM! BOX 2014 MIX TAPE #1 full of short stories by the creators who produce other titles for the company; this is forty eight pages for ten bucks. Their all age imprint, KaBOOM! has ABAGAIL AND THE SNOWMAN #1 OF 4 by Eisner Award Winner Roger (The Muppet Show) Langridge. BURLEYMAN ENTERTAINMENT collects Geoff Darrow’s complete initial run in the twenty dollar SHAOLIN COWBOY TP. DEVILS DUE ENTERTAINMENT starts SQUARRIORS #1, a tale of warring animals in a post-human world. DYNAMITE offers SHAFT #1, an ongoing series written by David Walker with art by Bilquis Evely and it’s about the ‘black private dick that’s a sex machine with all the chicks’. ARMY OF DARKNESS #1 is yet another ongoing series, this time written by Cullen Bunn with Larry Watts’ art. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE DEATH OF APOLLO #1 bridges the gap between the original series and Galactica 1980 written by Dan Abnett with the art of Dietrich Smith. LADY DEMON #1 is the relaunch of another Chaos character, a demon on the run from Lucifer’s hit squad. There is also a CHAOS! HOLIDAY SPECIAL one shot offered this month as well as THE AVENGER SPECIAL 2014, the DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL 2014, the FLASH GORDON HOLIDAY SPECIAL 2014 and THE SHADOW ONE SHOT 2014. The more literary output of FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS offers CREEPING DEATH FROM NEPTUNE: THE LIFE AND COMICS OF BASIL WOLVERTON, VOL. 1 HC, the first of two volumes and OFELIA: A LOVE AND ROCKETS BOOK TP, the fifth collection of the works of Gilbert Hernandez. :01 FIRST SECOND brings THE SCULPTOR HC, a signed exclusive edition only available in comic shops, this is Eisner Award Winner Scott McCloud’s magnum opus, an adult urban fable about the a young sculptor who makes a deal so that he can sculpt anything he can imagine with his bare hands, but with only two hundred days to live. This is almost five hundred pages, printed in two colors and limited to fifteen hundred copies for thirty bucks. World wide premiere manga publisher, KODANSHA offers the ATTACK ON TITAN: THE BEGINNING BOX SET, the first four volumes in a slipcase, over eight hundred pages for under forty five dollars plus ATTACK ON TITAN: THE SPINOFFS COLLECTION BOX SET which has the first volumes of No Regrets, Before the Fall and the parody Junior High, three volumes in a slipcase, fourteen hundred pages under forty bucks. Fans of the Man of Bronze will be pleased that DOC SAVAGE: THE FRIGHTENED FISH HC NOVEL is back in print after twenty years, for the first time as a hard cover thanks to MOONSTONE; this is a sequel to The Red Spider from 1948 and features a cover by Doug Klauba. NBM is offering A HOME FOR MR. EASTER GN which is the first published work of Brooke (Lumberjanes) Allen. ONI PRESS solicits the STUMPTOWN HC, VOL. 3, a full color mystery by NYT Best Selling Novelist Greg Rucka with Justin Greenwood’s art that’s suitable for young adults. (I hope that they put the three volumes out in soft cover sometime soon.) Ray Fawkes writes and illustrates POSSESSIONS: THE FINAL TANTRUM, the fourth book in the YALSA Award Winning all age series. While maintaining three monthly titles of the time lord shipping fifteen issues per year TITAN also offers LENORE: PINK BELLIES, the fifth full color hard cover collection of Roman Dirge’s popular dark Goth comedy. They also continue new comics as well as collections of the older space adventures of the Alien Legion still written by Chuck Dixon with art by Larry Strohman. I posted an article about the STRONG FEMALE PROTAGONIST, BOOK ONE GN on the shops’ Facebook page last week; this is written by Brennan Lee Mulligan with art by Molly Ostertag and published by TOP SHELF. The story of Mega Girl, a teen superhero going to college and trying to fight criminal activities in a less physical fashion has been online since 2012 and this book is the result of a successful Kickstarter campaign. They also collect the three volume series into one book with THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN III: CENTURY-THE COMPLETE EDITION HC by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill. Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt write and Paolo Rivera illustrates THE VALIANT #1 OF 4 and with those two stellar talents writing and Rivera drawing it hardly matters what the title is. Published by VALIANT, appropriately enough, this is a self contained new, reader friendly event with Bloodshot, Geomancer, the Eternal Warrior and heroes and villains from across the Valiant Universe. RAI #5 begins a new story arc and the VALIANT SIZED QUANTUM & WOODY #1 is a forty page one shot; this self avowed ‘Worst Superhero Team’ title received six Harvey Award nominations in 2014! HARBINGER: FAITH #0 focuses on the hero Zephyr, a normal girl with a kind heart and though her weight may put a damper on her social life she’s actually light as a feather. VIZ MEDIA offers ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM, VOL. 1 which is a comedy hit in Japan and I think the title describes the contents pretty well. ZENESCOPE offers THE JUNGLE BOOK: FALL OF THE WIND #1 OF 5 which brings us to the end of the comic section of this months’ catalog.

As I said, Alan Moore’s new book has to be the Pick of the Month for October but if it wasn’t Alan then the new Scott McCloud book, THE SCULPTOR HC would be the one, for sure.

There are several other sections in the catalog that I usually skip except for the occasional item that I think you might find interesting. In the BOOKS section is ASIAN COMICS HC, a four hundred page book nearly devoid of comic strips or books, the scope covers history and the rejuvenation of comics from Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The APPAREL section has lots of new tee shirts and hoodies, it seems there’s a new Harley Quinn design and a new Deadpool design every month but there has also been a lot of socks, stockings, underwear and bathrobes featuring popular licenses like Firefly, My Little Pony, Doctor Who video games like Zelda, Portal, etc. and in the TOYS section they have a Buddy Christ Plush Doll and lots of licensed products from Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy, Batman,Robocop, Star Wars, just about anything you can name and there’s trading cards, statues, games, all kinds of stuff so, if you’re interested, check out the catalog when you stop by and if there’s anything you’d like, let me know and I’ll be happy to order it for you.

If you’re not already, please follow the shop on Facebook as I tend to post a lot of comic news there; at least one post per hour when the shop is open and, if you’re not checking out the web site regularly then the Facebook will keep you informed about the events and other comic news. (The next event, though, will be on Saturday, the first of November: raffle, auction, prizes and a bunch of talented artists who will draw sketches for you.)

Thank you all for your orders, your friendship and support! See you soon!

    Peace,

    Charlie
