June 2018 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

The June Previews catalog arrived on Wednesday, May thirtieth (I’ll do my best to get this to you as soon as possible.) These solicitations are for comics and products that will begin shipping in August of 2018. I will try to point out the new and notable items that I think might interest you. If there’s anything that you’d like, please try to let me know by the twenty first of the month so I can be sure to have enough copies on hand to fill your requests and subscription orders. Don’t feel obligated to subscribe to a whole series; if you’d just like a copy of the first issue of a new series to try it out, let me know and I’ll be sure to put a copy aside for you. And if it’s past the twenty first there’s still a very good chance that I’ll be able to place your order and still get the books you want.

As I’ve mentioned the past couple of months, the layout of the Previews catalog has changed, adding Dynamite and Boom! Studios to the five premier publishers. And, as it was last month, the first premiere publisher featured is Image.

IMAGE: Our friend John (Chew) Layman who lives in our sister city to the north and regularly attends our annual comic convention launches LEVIATHAN #1 with art by Nick (Manhattan Projects) Pitarra, where some drinking buddies accidentally call up a demon from hell. The PERDY HC, VOL. 1 is a western written and illustrated by Angoulême Award nominee Kickliy; when Perdy gets out of the Yuma prison after fifteen years she’s anxious to get back to her two favorite things: sex and bank robbing. Cullen (Harrow County) Bunn begins another supernatural horror and psychological terror series with artist Mark Torres with COLD SPOTS #1 OF 5 as a man who turned his back on his family years ago now struggles to find his missing wife and daughter. CROWDED #1 is by Christopher (Harley Quinn) Sebela with art by Ro (Captain Marvel) Stein and Ted Brandt, a tale in the near future when everything is job shares and apps including Reapr, a crowdfunding platform to fund assassinations. Charles (Daredevil) Soule and Joe Quinones release the CURSE WORDS SUMMER SPECIAL one shot; if you’re a fan of zany magical adventures and haven’t tried this series, you may want to pick this one up; it’s a blast. Howard Chaykin writes, and Don Cameron illustrates HEY KIDS: COMICS! #1, a tongue in cheek look at the comic book industry; the names have been changed to protect the innocent. Ruben Award nominee Mike Norton releases his LIL DONNIE HC, VOL. 1: EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE following the timely and terrifying adventures of the worst President in history through his first year in office; Mike suggests you get a copy while we still have a First Amendment. Matt Hawkins and Raffaele Ienco release an original graphic novel reflecting on the ramifications of a post grad student finding a way to unlock information hidden deep within our DNA with the STAIRWAY OGN. (I should point out that two artists whose alternate covers seem to garner huge support at DC often do covers for other titles like the ‘B’ cover for UNNATURAL #2 OF 12 by Stanley ‘Artgerm’ Lau or the Mattina covers for this past and current arc of SPAWN #289 leading to the big three-hundredth issue.) Caitlin Kittredge and Roberta Ingranata begin the second arc with WITCHBLADE #7 and Image has listed a WALKING DEAD #1 15TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT but has released no other information other than there’s going to be something special in October for the anniversary of the first issue.

And my personal favorite Bendis title returns with SCARLET #1 OF 5 with regular series artist Alex Maleev. THE BOOK OF BALLADS AND SAGAS HC is a new edition of works by Neil Gaiman and others all featuring the artwork of Charles Vess. UDON releases the STREET FIGHTER: SUMMER SPORTS SPECIAL one shot pin-up book and they also have manga versions of classic literature like MANGA CLASSICS: ROMEO AND JULIET and MANGA CLASSICS: THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER, both available in either hard cover or soft cover editions. NINJA-K #10 by Christos Gage and Larry Strohman begins a new story arc at VALIANT and new collections include BLOODSHOT SALVATION, VOL. 2: THE BOOK OF THE DEAD TP with issues six through nine and the X-O MANOWAR COMPENDIUM, VOL. 1 TP with the twenty-nine issues from the first series plus the Unity four part and the Armor Hunters four part series’ priced under sixty dollars. VAULT COMICS begins FRIENDO #1 by Alex (Archadia) Paknadel and Martin (Punks Not Dead) Simmonds, an unhinged and ultraviolent tale of Leo and his personalized marketing VR which is malfunctioning. VIZ begins BLACK TORCH, VOL. 1, a supernatural shonen manga by Tsuyoshi Takaki and SHORTCAKE CAKE, VOL. 1, a shojo series by Suu Morishita. And that brings us to the end of the comic listings for this month.

As always, I try to choose what I think the best offering is in this months’ catalog and, as usual there are quite a few contenders. Both John Layman’s LEVIATHAN #1 and Cullen Bunn’s COLD SPOT #1 of 5 from Image, Ann Nocenti and David Aja’s SEEDS #1 from Dark Horse, the SANDMAN UNIVERSE #1 one shot and SCARLET #1 of 5 from DC, Matt Kindt and Paul Jenkins’ BLACK BADGE #1 from Boom! Studios, the DEAD MAN’S RUN TP from Greg Pak and Tony Parker at Aspen, BERLIN: COMPLETE EDITION HC from Jason Lutes at Drawn & Quarterly and Alex Paknadel and Martin Simmonds’ FRIENDO #1 from Vault Comics were all possibilities but my choice for Pick of the Month must be the new creator owned crime noir series from Brian Michael Bendis and Gaydos at DC: PEARL #1 of 6.

During the month of May we held one of the quarterly charity events, raising two thousand dollars for Youth on Their Own and I want to thank you all again for your support and generosity towards our community. We’ll be doing it again on the first Saturday in August to see how much we can raise for the good work at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. And I thank you all for your friendship and support, for keeping the lights on and food on the table for my family and I, for recommending my shop to your friends, for the good reviews of my shop that you post on social media; I’m constantly gratefully humbled.

All the best to you and yours; see you soon!

Some of the codes and abbreviations that I use are: HC (hard cover), TP (trade paperback), SC (soft cover), GN (graphic novel), OGN(original graphic novel-not a reprint or collection), MMPB (mass market paperbacks), AF (action figure), T/C trading cards, T/S (tee shirt) and (to denote an excellent writer, creator or title deserving wider recognition in my humble opinion).

Besides the monthly Previews catalog there is also an ‘Adult Supplement’ which showcases the ‘adults only’ comics, books and videos. If you are interested in seeing what’s available (and you’re over eighteen) just send me an email and I will send you this month’s adult catalog with images, descriptions and prices.

If you’d prefer not to receive this in the future, please respond with UNSUBSCRIBE; I’m not trying to spam you! I only send this to subscription customers or those who request it. (I won’t be insulted at all if you’d like to discontinue. When I proofread it each month I know first-hand how tedious it can be. Thank you.)
