June 2016 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

The June Previews catalog has just arrived so as I read through it I will try to point out the new and notable items that I think might interest you. These solicitations are for comics and products that will begin shipping in August of 2016. If there’s anything that you’d like please try and let me know by the twenty first of this month so I can be sure to have enough copies on hand to fill your requests and subscription orders. (Don’t feel obligated to subscribe to a whole series; if you’d just like a copy of the first issue of a new series to try it out, let me know and I’ll be sure to put a copy aside for you.)

This month the theme is Video Games so expect a lot of the comics and graphic novels that tend to bridge each new release. Also there’s a contest to win some of these graphic novels and toys at www.PreviewsWorld.com. (There is a list of the codes and abbreviations used on the newsletter at the bottom of the page.)

DARK HORSE: The prolific Brian (Massive, Aliens: Defiance, Starve, Black Road, Rebels) Wood launches a new ongoing series with BRIGGS LAND #1 featuring art by Marc Chater, this is a tale of America’s largest anti-government secessionist camp (and is already in development as an AMC television program). The series should appeal to fans of Sons of Anarchy, and comics like Scarlet and Renato Jones. Joëlle Jones writes and illustrates the sequel to her multi Eisner Award nominated series with LADY KILLER 2 #1 OF 5, a retro tale of a killer housewife. Dark Horse has been working with Moebius Productions in France to put all of the masters work back in print and now offers MOEBIUS LIBRARY: THE WORLD OF EDENA HC.     INDEPENDENTS: When I write these newsletters I imagine how I would make use of them and I would most likely read about what my favorite publishers’ are offering and skip the ones whose output I’m not especially fond of, so for this section I would tend to check out Aftershock Press,
Archaia, an imprint of Boom, Black Mask Comics, Drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics, Oni Press, etc. whose editorial policies and selections often intrigue me.

A favorite creator has just finished a long running series and as I loved his previous works (Strangers in Paradise, Echo) I’m excited about the RACHEL RISING OMNIBUS HC, over eight hundred pages of story and art, crime suspense involving a murdered woman tracking her own killer, self published by Terry Moore at ABSTRACT STUDIOS. A new series by Marguerite (A-Force, DC Bombshells) Bennett and Rafael De Latore from AFTERSHOCK is ANIMOSITY #1, a coming of age road trip tale about when the animals gain awareness and take revenge. However new series begins with GRIMM FAIRY TALES: APOCALYPSE #1 OF 5 and VAN HELSING VS. FRANKENSTEIN #1 OF 5. And that brings us to the end of the comic book listings. I have five contenders this month but most everyone will pick up ALL-STAR BATMAN #1 just because Scott Snyder is writing it and anyone who is a fan of noir crime stories will pick up Brubaker and Phillips’ KILL OR BE KILLED #1. Several customers have already signed on for Hickman and Coker’s THE BLACK MONDAY MURDERS #1 and although I’ve already ordered myself a copy of Dave McKean’s BLACK DOG: THE DREAMS OF PAUL NASH I’d rather recommend a series than a graphic novel so, by the process of elimination my choice for Pick of the Month this time is Brian Wood’s new Dark Horse series BRIGG’S LAND #1.

June fourth is Dark Horse Day and I will also be hosting a release party for the COUNTDOWN UNTIL NOW TP, an anthology of eleven stories inspired by the friendships formed at the Las Vegas MORRISON CON in 2012. Two of the contributors and attendees will be here from TEN until THREE to autograph your copies: HENRY BARAJAS and JACOB BRECKENRIDGE! Get this cool book and support our local artists!

Thank you all for your orders, support and friendship; I am grateful and humbled.

    Peace,

    Charlie
