June 2012 Newsletter

Dear Friends:

The new Previews catalog arrived on the thirtieth of May and features the comics and product due to begin arriving in August. If you see things that you like please let me know by the third week of the month so I can make sure to have it available for you.

Some of the codes and abbreviations that I use are: HC (hard cover), TP (trade paperback), SC (soft cover), GN (graphic novel), AF (action figure) T/S (tee shirt) and ☼(an excellent writer, creator or title deserving wider recognition in my humble opinion). Here are the top creators along with their current projects, creations and titles.

I suspect that I’ll be compelled to by a collected edition as I’m surely going to read this story a few more times.

BARKER: Clive co-writes his characters with Mark L. Miller and HELLRAISER #17 begins a new arc with art by Janusz Ordon.

BEDARD: Antony writes GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #12 and the first arc is collected in GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS HC 01: RING BEARER both featuring the pencils of Tyler Kirkham being inked by Matt ‘Batt’ Banning. And Antony also writes BLUE BEETLE #17 with J.P. Mayer inking Ig Guara’s pencils.

Jeff writes and illustrates his SWEET TOOTH #36 at Vertigo. Top Shelf Productions releases the ☼UNDERWATER WELDER GN HC, Jeff’s latest masterpiece, a story of a man coming to terms with fatherhood; Damon Lindelof calls it ‘the most spectacular episode of ‘The Twilight Zone’ that was never produced’. If you missed Jeff’s award winning ‘Essex County Trilogy’ then perhaps this will be the tale that shows you the strength of his personal and emotional storytelling that has made him one of the most critically acclaimed writers in the field.  I prefer the first issue of a series rather than a graphic novel but, nevertheless this is my PICK OF THE MONTH for June.

MORRISON: Grant writes ☼ACTION COMICS #12 with artist Rick Bryant and ☼BATMAN INCORPORATED #4 with series artist Chris Burnham. The latest issue of ‘Action’ was the best so far in my opinion, a stand alone, alternate universe story, and the first issue of the just restarted ‘Batman Incorporated’ was also brilliant. With the amount of comic books that I read you might imagine that I’ve become a bit jaded about super hero comics but reading Grant’s work is always a strong reminder of how these stories can still be exciting, surprising and revelatory.

MURPHY: Sean created, writes and illustrates ☼PUNK ROCK JESUS #2 OF 6, this new series was my PICK OF THE MONTH for May.

His brilliant run with Tony Harris and JH Williams’ art is collected in the STARMAN OMNIBUS TP 02 and he writes HE MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE #2 OF 6 with art by Phillip Tan and Ruy Jose.

RUCKA: Greg writes PUNISHER #14 with Mico Suayan’s art. Two weeks ago Greg released his latest novel, ‘Alpha’ and I’m about twenty pages from the edge and am having a hard time putting it down to write this. Another brilliant tale with terrorists attacking an American theme park (which is a little nerve wracking as my wife and daughter are at Disneyland this week).

These issues are celebrating fifty years of Spider-Man so expect variant covers galore, lots of back up stories; issue 692 will be 64 pages with original stories by Dean Haspiel, Joshua Hale Fialkov and Nuno Plati for $5.99.

SNYDER: Scott continues taking the caped crusader away from being a super hero comic to a full out Gothic horror tale with☼BATMAN #12 featuring the art of Greg Capullo, his ☼SWAMP THING #12 is continued from ‘Animal Man’ and is illustrated by Marco Rudy. Miller, this is the second in the ongoing series of one shots focusing on gone but (hopefully) not forgotten classic DC characters. (Have you forgotten? Emily Briggs was a supermodel, then she was turned into a vampire and now she uses her supernatural powers to protect the innocent in the corrupt world of high fashion.) The Vertigo imprint offers the PRINCE OF CATS TP is a hip hop retelling of Romeo and Juliet set in a Blade Runner-esque version of Brooklyn with Samurai action and written in iambic pentameter. Also the V FOR VENDETTA BOOK & MASK SET is the trade paperback of the Alan Moore and David Lloyd and comes with the famed ‘V’ mask in PVC, fashionable for all of your Occupy gatherings.

The DAREDEVIL ANNUAL #1 features Doctor Strange and the ClanDestine, the story began in FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL #33 and will conclude in WOLVERINE ANNUAL #1, all three titles written and illustrated by Alan Davis. I’ve enjoyed Frank Miller’s work for many years and my personal favorite work of his is a collaboration with artist Bill Sienkeiwicz. The editor says that every time a page of art arrived both creators suggested and implemented changes and by the end it became the most complex story either Bill or Frank ever did. It’s been out of print for a while but the ☼ELEKTRA ASSASSIN TP, collecting the eight issue series is being offered again and will be back in print the first week of July.
