July 2012 Newsletter

Dear Friends:

The new Previews catalog has arrived and features the comics and product due to begin arriving in August. If you see things that you like please let me know by the third week of the month so I can make sure to have it available for you.

Some of the codes and abbreviations that I use are: HC (hard cover), TP (trade paperback), SC (soft cover), GN (graphic novel), AF (action figure) T/S (tee shirt) and ☼(an excellent writer, creator or title deserving wider recognition in my humble opinion).

Here’s what’s new from the publishers this month::

DARK HORSE: GHOST #0 relaunches the character that you may recall from a mediocre film. The☼SHAOLIN COWBOY ADVENTURE MAGAZINE TP features best selling crime novelist Andrew Vachss, Geoff Darrow, Mike Black and Gary Gianni with what is basically a pulp novel featuring the Shaolin Cowboy and his trusty mule in ‘a kung fu gripping tale of high adventure and martial law.’ The NEXUS OMNIBUS: VOL #1 TP collects the first fourteen issues of Mike Baron and Steve Rude’s brilliant series; (I wish it was in a larger format than 6” X 9”). The RAGEMOOR HC collects the recent Gothic horror series written by Jan Strnad with art by Richard Corben.

DC: Lots of news at DC, as usual. Now that the ‘New 52’ has passed the one year mark all of their issues this month are ‘zero’ issues, restating the origins, some of which have changed a bit and all of which have seemed to become more dynamic and timely. Also there are four new titles that, for the sake of convenience we’ll call ‘New 52-Wave Three’. The four new titles this time around are TALON #0 which anyone reading ‘Batman’ (which is most everyone) can figure out, and PHANTOM STRANGER #0 who we all know, and the Free Comic Book Day offering from DC featured a preview, TEAM 7 #0 which you may remember from the Image series of many years ago, although the team features some DC characters like Dinah Lance, Amanda Waller and Steve Trevor and SWORD OF SORCERY #0. This final one features the return of Amethyst, the Princess of Gemworld and is written by Christy Marks who has written such animated properties as ‘G.I. Joe’, ‘Transformers’ and the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ and also worked on the comic series ‘Sisterhood of Steel’. I’ve noticed that three titles have been canceled to make room for ‘Wave Three’; the zero issues will be the final issues for CAPTAIN ATOM #0, RESURRECTION MAN #0 and VOODOO #0. THE RAVAGERS #0 is written by Howard Mackie with the art of Ian Churchill. The series of comics, all first issues NATIONAL COMICS: ROSE AND THORN #1 is written by Tom Taylor with Neil Googe’s art. WOMANTHOLOGY: SPACE #1 OF 5, this is the first of three new limited series’ spinning out of the ‘Womanthology’ Kickstarter project. Each issue has three six page stories written and illustrated by the industries best female creators.

IMAGE: It’s my Pick of the Month and I’ll mention it again later but Grant Morrison is writing an original, creator owned series! (I’m excited about this; can you tell?) HAPPY #1 OF 4 features art by Darick Robertson and, if Grant can write such brilliant tales with characters that have been around for three quarters of a century just imagine what he’ll do with a blank page! VALENTINE VOLUME #1: THE ICE DEATH TP collects the first ten chapters of the online supernatural thriller with an exclusive 42 page story.

MARVEL: Since just about everyone has seen the Avengers movie you can probably guess where Marvel is going next: outer space. They’ve brought the INFINITY GAUNTLET back into print and they’re offering THANOS: THE FINAL THREAT #1, a reprint of the ‘Avengers Annual #7’ from 1967 and the ‘Marvel Two-In-One Annual’ #2, both written and illustrated by Jim Starlin. Then THE THANOS QUEST is a hundred page one shot reprinting ‘Thanos Quest’ #1 and #2 from 1990, written by Starlin with the art of Ron Lim.
