December 2018 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

The December Previews catalog arrived on Wednesday, November twenty-eighth. I’ll do my best to get this to you as soon as possible. These solicitations are for comics and products that will begin shipping in February of 2019. I will try to point out the new and notable items that I think might interest you. If there’s anything that you’d like, please try to let me know by the twenty first of the month so I can be sure to have enough copies on hand to fill your requests and subscription orders. Don’t feel obligated to subscribe to a whole series; if you’d just like a copy of the first issue of a new series to try it out, let me know and I’ll be sure to put a copy aside for you. And if it’s past the twenty first there’s still a very good chance that I’ll be able to place your order and still get the books you want.

Each month I try to choose the best offering, and there are always several contenders, actually a dozen this month! I try to pick these mostly due to the creators on the books, but also based on the premise. SHARKEY, THE BOUNTY HUNTER #1 OF 6 and HIT-GIRL, SEASON TWO #1 from Image, from Mark Millar and Kevin Smith respectively are good bets. THE GIRL IN THE BAY #1 by J. M. DeMatteis and edited by Karen Berger from Dark Horse’s Berger Books imprint, the FEMALE FURIES #1 OF 6 promising to focus on Kirby’s Fourth World and spinning out of the wonderful Mister Miracle series, Mark Russel on the WONDER TWINS #1 OF 6 from their Wonder Comics imprint and HIGH LEVEL #1 from their Vertigo imprint at DC, the SPRINGTIME IN CHERNOBYL HC from IDW, the final issue of Terry Moore’s STRANGERS IN PARADISE XXV #10 from his Abstract Studios promising to tie all of his series’ together, the AZTEC ACE: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION HC from Doug Moench at It’s Alive and THE BE-BOP BARBARIANS HC from Pegasus are all valid contenders but my Pick of the Month
goes to ♥DAREDEVIL #1 from Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto; I know it’s rare for me to pick a Marvel title. I thought killing off Matt Murdock was a cheap thrill but I also think that Daredevil is the Marvel character that has the most story potential and consequently attracts the best talent; Zdarsky has proven to be a great writer in a number of diverse styles and, with Checchetto’s artwork I’m hoping for a run as strong as Frank Miller’s was on this title.

The next scheduled will be for Emerge: The Center Against Domestic Violence on the first Saturday in February but I encourage you all to follow the shop’s Facebook page as I post something about comics once per hour when the shop is open and often post surprise sales, signings, etc. there. Here’s the link:

As always, I am so grateful for all of the friendships made through the shop; I’m so happy to get to know you, your families, your children, to share your stories and interests. I may never be financially stable but I’ve reaped a wealth of friends and, personally that’s much more valuable to me so thank you all. Your support of the shop as well as of the charities and benefits is all priceless treasure. I hope that you all have a wonderful, warm holiday season with plenty of friends, family and memories to reflect on for many years to come.

Some of the codes and abbreviations that I use are: HC (hard cover), TP (trade paperback), SC (soft cover), GN (graphic novel), OGN(original graphic novel-not a reprint or collection), MMPB (mass market paperbacks), AF (action figure), T/C trading cards, T/S (tee shirt) and (to denote an excellent writer, creator or title deserving wider recognition in my humble opinion).

Besides the monthly Previews catalog there is also an ‘Adult Supplement’ which showcases the ‘adults only’ comics, books and videos. If you are interested in seeing what’s available (and you’re over eighteen) just send me an email and I will send you this month’s adult catalog with images, descriptions and prices.

If you’d prefer not to receive this in the future, please respond with UNSUBSCRIBE; I’m not trying to spam you! I only send this to subscription customers or those who request it. (I won’t be insulted at all if you’d like to discontinue. When I proofread it each month I know first-hand how tedious it can be. Thank you.)
