August 2015 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

The August Previews catalog is sitting on the desk at the shop as always, available for your perusal when you stop by. Meanwhile I will try to point out the new and notable items that I think might interest you.

These solicitations are for comics and products that will begin shipping in October of 2015. If there’s anything that you’d like please try and let me know by the twenty first of this month so I can be sure to have enough copies on hand to fill your requests and subscription orders.

Some of the codes and abbreviations that I use are: HC (hard cover), TP (trade paperback), SC (soft cover), GN (graphic novel), OGN (original graphic novel-not a reprint or collection), MMPB (mass market paperbacks), AF (action figure), T/C trading cards, T/S (tee shirt) and(to denote an excellent writer, creator or title deserving wider recognition in my humble opinion).

Besides the monthly Previews catalog there is also an ‘Adult Supplement’ which showcases the ‘adults only’ comics, books and videos. If you are interested in seeing what’s available (and you’re over eighteen) just send me an email and I will send you this month’s adult catalog with images, descriptions and prices.

The theme this month is Kid Friendly comics so, aside from new all age series, the publishers will be offering their back catalog of collected editions too.

IDW: The big news from Idea & Design Works this month is BACK TO THE FUTURE #1 OF 4 (as I’ve already had several customers add it to their subscription lists), written by original screen writer Bob Gale with John (Transformers) Barber and Erik (TMNT, Ghostbusters) Burnham and illustrated by Brent (Batman ’66) Schoonover, although, personally I’m more interested in HUNTER S. THOMPSON’S FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS HC adapted and illustrated by Troy Little from IDW’s recently acquired imprint, TOP SHELF, who also offers the LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN: NEMO TRILOGY SLIPCASE EDITION with the three hard cover volumes by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill, Heart of Ice, The Roses of Berlin and River of Ghosts all for forty dollars. IDW’s long association with those turtles puts them in a position to release some long lost treasures and one such is Kevin Eastman and Simon Bisley’s FISTFUL OF BLOOD #1 OF 4 which is now remastered and recolored with bonus material. STAR TREK #50 is a double size issue beginning a three part story as the crew of the new movie franchise meets its evil Mirror counterpart. The MY LITTLE PONY: ART GALLERY II features rare and never before seen art featuring your favorite Pony artists. Walt Simonson’s brilliant and gorgeous tale of the Norse Gods is collected in the RAGNARÖK, VOL. 1: LAST GOD STANDING HC.

IMAGE: Skottie Young has made a big name for himself drawing Chibi versions of Marvel and Wizard of Oz characters and now he makes his Image debut with I HATE FAIRYLAND #1 (which tends to suggest that he’s maybe not real happy drawing all of those Chibi Marvel characters?). It’s about Gert, a six year old stuck in Fairyland for thirty years who will hack and slash her way through anything to get back home. PAPER GIRLS #1 is a new ongoing series from B. K. (Saga) Vaughan and Cliff Chiang, a young adult adventure described as Stand By Me meets War of the Worlds starring four twelve year old newspaper delivery girls and the first issue is forty eight pages for two ninety nine! Shane (Superman: Earth One) Davis begins an ongoing science fiction thriller described as ‘Tron meets Inception with a cheat code’ and asks the question, What happens when a video game decides to come to our reality to play? in AXCEND #1. Antony (The Fuse, Daredevil) Johnson writes and Shari Chankhamma illustrates CODENAME BABOUSHKA: THE CONCLAVE OF DEATH #1, a modern pulp spy thriller with a kick ass female hero in the style of Modesty Blaise. There are SO many good books this month! And usually nothing would excite me more than a new series from B. K. Vaughan, but, being fortunate enough to have met the artist and seen his work, the book I’m most anticipating is SAINTS #1, which is the Pick of the Month
for August. Written by Sean Lewis, award winning playwright, actor, journalist and regular on NPR’s This American Life and illustrated by brilliant artist Ben Mackey, this is a new ongoing crime/horror series described as ‘Dexter style action collides with a Preacher-esque sensibility’, ‘the occult rises in a first issue crammed full of heavy metal, sex and deadly one-liners’. (If you haven’t met this incredibly talented artist, please stop by the shop on Saturday, the first of August and do so. He’ll be here helping to raise money for the St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital and will have an original art piece that you could own through the silent auction.) The
CBLDF PRESENTS LIBERTY ANNUAL 2015 is an annual one shot anthology benefiting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and full of satire and parody all in support of Free Speech and featuring many of the industries greatest talents and legends including Jeffrey Brown, Art Spiegelman, Peter Bagge, Joshua Fialkov and many more. Stjepan Sejic brings SWITCH #1, his popular web comic to print. BLACK MAGICK #1 begins a new series by best selling author and Eisner Award winner Greg (Lazarus, Gotham Central, Stumptown) Rucka with art by Nicola (Birds of Prey, Secret Six) Scott, a crime series with a deeper, character driven personal story and each issue will also feature an all new work of original fiction by Rucka. CAMP MIDNIGHT OGN is written by Steven (Ben 10, Big Hero 6) T. Seagle with art by New Yorker Magazine cartoonist Jason Adam Katzenstein about a stubborn girl sent to the wrong camp (this one is for monsters) determined to NOT fit in. Collected editions offered this month include INJECTION, VOL. 1 TP and the JUPITER’S CIRCLE, VOL. 1 TP, both for under ten bucks, THE MANTLE, VOL. 1 TP, SECRET IDENTITIES, VOL. 1 TP, SOUTHERN CROSS, VOL. 1, TP, the WALKING DEAD COMPENDIUM, VOL. 3, COPPERHEAD, VOL. 2 TP, the SATELLITE SAM DELUXE HC, the WAYWARD, BOOK 1: DELUXE HC, KAPTARA, VOL. 1: FEAR NOT, TINY ALIEN TP (for $9.98; the cheapest yet), LOW, VOL. 2 TP: BEFORE THE DAWN BURNS US and CASANOVA: ACEDIA, VOL. 1 TP. There are half a dozen titles from Image this month that might have been the Pick of the Month if the competition wasn’t so heavy; this company has set the bar so high!

MARVEL: While Secret Wars was supposed to be a weekly series, missed deadlines have caused delays across the line of all the Marvel titles. SECRET WARS #8 OF 8 is now scheduled to arrive on the first Wednesday in October (instead of the last Wednesday in June). This has put a monkey wrench into the timing of the (not a) reboot, so they’re beginning the first round of relaunches in October. There is also still SECRET WARS: AGENTS OF ATLAS #1, a one shot by Tom Taylor and Steve Pugh with Agent Coulson, Baron Zemo, Marvel Boy, Gorilla-Man and more. And many of the limited series will be reaching their final issues such as MARVEL ZOMBIES #4, SIEGE #4, THORS #4, WHERE MONSTERS DWELL #5, 1872 #4, CIVIL WAR #5, INFINITY GAUNTLET #5, WEIRDWORLD #5, AGE OF APOCALYPSE #5, HOUSE OF M #4, HAIL HYDRA #4, SPIDER-ISLAND #5, SQUADRON SINISTER #4 and 1602: WITCH HUNTER ANGELA #4. Here are some of the new titles to expect beginning with the ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT MARVEL POINT 1 #1, a one shot with six stories leading into the new and different, including Daredevil, Carnage, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Contest of Champions and two that are ‘classified’ and, in the same vein comes AVENGERS #0 with stories leading into the relaunches of the all-new, all-different Avengers, Squadron Supreme, A-Force, New Avengers, Ultimates and Uncanny Avengers.
INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1 will be written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by David Marquez. As these two creators have worked together for quite some time, and as Bendis’ skill lies in character development, I suspect this will be the beginning of one of the better runs for this seminal character. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 by Dan Slott and Giuseppe Camuncoli will expand on Peter’s role as CEO as Parker Industries goes global with offices in Shanghai, London and San Francisco and the big first issue will also have stories featuring Silk, Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Woman and more. ANGELA: QUEEN OF HEL #1 will be written by Marguerite Bennett with Kim Jacinto and Stephanie Hans illustrating and BLADE #1 will be by Tim Seeley with Logan Faerber’s art (oh, and the character is now female). THE ASTONISHING ANT-MAN #1 will be by Nick Spencer and Ramon Rosannas and will be Scott Lang’s story, not Hank Pym’s. CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS #1, though based on an RPG is kind of a continuation of Battleworld from Secret Wars as Maestro continues to put lives on the line for a return ticket to Earth. DOCTOR STRANGE #1 is a character that Jason Aaron has wanted to write for some time now and he insisted on artist Chris Bachalo and consequently I think this one is going to be the relaunch of this character that we’ve been waiting years for. EXTRAORDINARY X-MEN #1 will be written by the brilliant, award winning Jeff Lemire with art by Humberto Ramos with Storm leading the team of Magik, Daken, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Iceman and others, (although which incarnations of these characters is anybodies guess at this point). GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1 minus Peter Quill and with the Raccoon in charge will be written by Brian Michael Bendis with Valerio Schiti providing the artwork. The HOWLING COMMANDOS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 is Dum Dum Dugan (or his L.M.D.) leading the monsters and aliens that the spies keep hidden under their headquarters; (think Suicide Squad), written by Frank Barbiere with Brent Schoonover’s art. One of the last creations by Jack ‘King’ Kirby before he left Marvel were the Inhumans and edgy author Warren Ellis writes and Gerardo Zaffino illustrates KARNAK #1, the powerful martial artist who can see the flaw in all things; I’m looking forward to this one. The NEW AVENGERS #1 will be written by Al Ewing with Gerardo Sandoval’s art and they’re now Avengers Idea Mechanics led by Sunspot and not liked by S.H.I.E.L.D. or America in general. CAPTAIN AMERICA: SAM WILSON #1 is by Nick Spencer with Daniel Acuña, a solid creative team that will hopefully make people like Sam as much as they did Steve. SPIDER-GWEN #1 will be by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez (and it says here ‘Because you demanded it’; who asked that this book restart after only five issues?). SPIDER-MAN 2099 #1 is again by Peter David and Will Sliney with Miguel working at Parker Industries. The UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #1 is still by Ryan North and Erica Henderson with their second first issue this year. The UNCANNY AVENGERS #1 is by Gerry Duggan and Ryan Stegman with a new team led by Steve Rogers featuring humans, mutants and Inhumans (and Deadpool?). The UNCANNY INHUMANS #1 is written by Charles Soule with Steve McNiven and Brandon Peterson providing the art, the team consisting of Medusa, Black Bolt, Triton, Reader plus the Human Torch and Beast. A return to the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe affectionately know as OHOTMU brings the first of a series of one shots with GUIDEBOOK TO THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE-MARVEL’S IRON MAN. There are also five one shots, all written by Joshua Williamson under the heading ‘What If-Infinity’. These include: WHAT IF? INFINITY-THANOS #1
with Mike Henderson’s art asking ‘What if Thanos joined the Avengers?, WHAT IF? INFINITY-INHUMANS #1
with Riley Rossmo’s art asking ‘What if the Inhumans took over Earth?, WHAT IF? INFINITY-AVENGERS #1
with Mike Norton’s art asking ‘What if the Avengers lost the war, WHAT IF? INFINITY-GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1 with Jason Copland’s art asking ‘What if the Guardians of the Galaxy found out the Illuminati were hiding Thanos?’ and WHAT IF? INFINITY-DARK REIGN #1 with Goran Sudzuka’s art asking ‘What if Norman Osborn had the Infinity Gauntlet?’. The MARVEL SUPER HERO SPECTACULAR #1 is an all age one shot by Karl Kesel with David Baldeon’s art featuring Spider-Man, the Avengers, the Guardians and more. And from the Star Wars franchise comes a new limited series with CHEWBACCA #1 OF 5 by Gerry Duggan with art by Phil Noto. In collected editions comes the SECRET WARS HC for fifty bucks along with collections of all the limited series’ that tied in: INFINITY GAUNTLET: WARZONES! TP, A-FORCE, VOL. 9: WARZONES! And, in case you didn’t see my Facebook post recently, there are a bunch of Marvel variant covers this month that are parodies of classic hip hop album covers.

One of the unique aspects of this event is the BOOK OF DEATH: LEGENDS OF THE GEOMANCER four part series; every issue was a retailer incentive that was, I’m sorry to say, too expensive for my shop to acquire for my customers. They say it won’t be available digitally or in trade paperback. I guess they wanted as few people as possible to read this one. IMPERIUM #9 and UNITY #23 are both jumping on points with new arcs beginning while UNITY, VOL. 1: TO KILL A KING TP and RAI, VOL. 1: WELCOME TO NEW JAPAN TP both get new printings.     Peace,
