August 2014 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

The August Previews catalog is sitting on my desk, available for your perusal when you stop by. Meanwhile I will try to point out the new and notable items that I think might interest you.

These solicitations are for comics and products that will begin shipping in October. If there’s anything that you’d like please try and let me know by the twenty first of the month so I can be sure to have enough copies on hand to fill your requests and subscription orders.

Some of the codes and abbreviations that I use are: HC (hard cover), TP (trade paperback), SC (soft cover), GN (graphic novel), OGN (original graphic novel-not a reprint or collection), MMPB (mass market paperbacks), AF (action figure), T/C (trading cards, T/S (tee shirt) and
(to denote an excellent writer, creator or title deserving wider recognition in my humble opinion).

Besides the monthly Previews catalog there is also an ‘Adult Supplement’ which showcases the ‘adults only’ comics, books and videos. If you are interested in seeing what’s available (and you’re over eighteen) please send me an email and I will email you this month’s adult catalog in a .pdf format with images, descriptions and prices.

The theme this month is How to Draw so there will be lots of instructional books offered as well as books from different creators explaining their processes.

If you’re a fan of conventions the SABOTEN Con will be in Phoenix taking place from August twenty ninth through September first and you can go here for more information or to register:

DARK HORSE: Last month I told you how there were two licensed properties that were being connected by two series: Prometheus: Fire & Stone
and Aliens: Fire & Stone. Well, in addition to these two four part limited series there will also be ALIENS VS PREDATOR: FIRE & STONE #1 of 4 by Christopher Sebela with Ariel Olivetti’s art and PREDATOR: FIRE & STONE #1 of 4 by Joshua Williamson with the art of Chris Mooneyham. HALO: ESCALATION #11 begins a new arc. David Mack of Kabuki fame releases the
DREAM LOGIC HC collecting the entire series, exclusive material, as well as the ‘art of’ and the ‘making of’ his Tarot card set which has been exhibited in galleries around the world. CONAN THE AVENGERS #7 begins a new arc written by Fred Van Lente with Brian Ching’s artwork. The BLACK SKY SAMPLER is a one shot with four full issues for five bucks including Blackout #1, Brain Boy #0, Ghost #1 and The Occultist: At Death’s Door #1.
DARK HORSE PRESENTS #3 has a new Brendan McCarthy feature, Dream Gang and Ricardo Delgado returns to his Age of Reptiles series. Mike (47 Ronin) Richardson writes and Gabriel Guzmán begins
FATHER’S DAY #1 of 4, the tale of a retired mob enforcer who has left the life behind and found peace until his abandoned daughter brings his past crashing down. The ATHENA VOLTAIRE COMPENDIUM HC collects the Russ Manning Award and Eisner nominated digital comic series, re-scripted, remastered and with over fifty pages of new material by creator Steve Bryant telling the pulp adventures of the aviatrix fighting Nazis, monsters and zombies. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: SEASON TEN #8 begins a new arc.
BALTIMORE: THE WOLF AND THE APOSTLE #1 of 2 is a new tale by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden with art by Peter Bergting. B.P.R.D.: HELL ON EARTH #124 is a stand alone story. One of the scariest horror stories I’ve read in comics recently was Paul Tobin and Juan Ferreyra’s Colder and now it returns as an ongoing series with
COLDER: THE BAD SEED #1. The Harvey Awards are respectfully named after one of the greatest comic creators that most fans have never experienced; Dark Horse strives to change this by releasing the
ESSENTIAL KURTZMAN VOL. 1 HC: HARVEY KURTZMAN’S JUNGLE BOOK, this classic has been out of print for twenty five years.

DC: Many of you have noticed that DC has been making their variant covers more accessible these past three months and I’ve been trying to order in such a way that you can choose between the covers that you prefer. In August the covers are Selfie’s, in July they were commemorating Batman’s 75th Anniversary, in June they were the Bombshell variants, in May they were Batman ’66 variants and in October the variants will be Monster themed for Halloween. DC is already putting out two weekly series and the third begins in the forty eight page first issue of
EARTH TWO: WORLD’S END #1 written by New York Times best selling novelist Daniel H. (Robopocalypse, Robogenesis) Wilson along with Marguerite Bennett and Mike Johnson and the first four issues are illustrated by Eddy Barrows and Paulo Siquiera.
THE MULTIVERSITY: THE JUST #1 takes place on self-obsessed Earth-16 (a.k.a. as Earth-Me) written by Grant Morrison with art by Ben Oliver. New ongoing series’ that will debut in October includes ARKHAM MANOR #1 written by Gerry Duggan with art by Shawn Crystal and
GOTHAM ACADEMY #1 written by Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher with art by Karl Kerschl. The former deals with a catastrophe at the Asylum forcing the inmates to move to Wayne Manor and the latter is a teen drama at Gotham’s prestigious prep school with oddball teachers, rich benefactors and strange students. Also DC’s deadliest assassin gets his own title with
DEATHSTROKE #1 written and illustrated by Tony S. Daniel. And KLARION #1 is the New 52 debut of the Witch Boy as popularized in Grant Morrison’s Seven Soldiers series. This one will be written by Ann Nocenti with art by Trevor McCarthy. Ann’s work on Green Arrow and Catwoman hasn’t really impressed me but I hope that she does a good job with this intriguing character and this talented artist. Cullen Bunn will write and Reilly Brown will illustrate the ultra violent ongoing new series LOBO #1. Although both Trinity of Sin: Pandora and Trinity of Sin: The Phantom Stranger have ended both characters will join with the Question in the new
TRINITY OF SIN #1 series written by J. M. DeMatteis with the art of Yvel Guichet and Jason Gordon. I’ve enjoyed Jeff Lemire’s run on the archer’s series since issue seventeen but it’s time for a new creative team and it will be the writers of the popular television program, Andrew Kreisberg and Ben Solokowski with artist Daniel Sampere beginning with
NEW SUICIDE SQUAD #3 has a cat fight we’ve been expecting as Harley and the Joker’s Daughter brawl through the streets of Moscow.
JUSTICE LEAGUE #35 begins a new story, still written by Geoff Johns with the art team of Ivan Reis and Joe Prado for this arc, ‘The Amazo Virus’; does the merger of Wayne Enterprises and LexCorp have a connection?
JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED #5 focuses on new member Equinox of the Moose Cree First Nation while the
JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED ANNUAL #1 begins ‘The Infinitus Saga’ as the Legion of Super-Heroes arrive telling of the destruction of the thirty first century, both written by Jeff Lemire. The House of Mystery and the House of Secrets take human form in the JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK ANNUAL #2. Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang finish their historic run with WONDER WOMAN #35 and they also tell the Amazon’s tale in SECRET ORIGINS #6 which will also tell the beginnings of Deadman and Sinestro.
SUPERGIRL #35 are all dealing with the aftermath of the ‘Doomed’ story finding out what’s left of Smallville, the Man of Steel and his relationship with Diana. After the long ‘Zero Year’ story I expected the creative team to take a little hiatus but, no, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo return with another epic tale titled ‘Endgame’ beginning in the forty page
BATMAN #35. In
GRAYSON #3 a new key player debuts, the world’s greatest spy, the Tiger, and Dick draws his gun; will he pull the trigger? DETECTIVE COMICS #35 begins a two part tale, ‘Terminal’ written by author Ben Percy and artist John Paul Leon involving an arrival of a plane full of dead passengers at Gotham Airport. A new creative team debuts on
BATGIRL #35 with writers Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher and art by Babs Tarr as Barbara relocates to the hip border district of Burnside. I was prepared to be upset when the time came for Gail Simone to say farewell to this title but having the brilliant Cameron Stewart on the book has changed my expected disappointment to anticipation. BATWOMAN #35 begins a new story with new artist George Jeanty who has been working on Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics for a long time. And CATWOMAN #35 also has a new creative team with novelist Genevieve Brown writing and Garry Brown providing interior art under a Jae Lee cover as Selina becomes the Crime Boss of Gotham. The
HARLEY QUINN ANNUAL #1 stinks; take a trip to Harley’s Coney Island home complete with the smells by way of scratch and sniff panels; the book will be bagged to contain the stench. The cover features images of toilets, dirty socks, trash cans, dead fish and litter boxes, just so you know. For a while now it seems that, to read one title you have to read them all; now that ‘Uprising’ and ‘Lights Out’ have ended it’s time for
GREEN LANTERN/NEW GODS: GODHEAD #1, a one shot written and illustrated by the writers and artists of all five of the connected books and it will continue in GREEN LANTERN #35, GREEN LANTERN CORPS #35, GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #35, RED LANTERNS #35 and SINESTRO #6. The Highfather is not pleased that the Lanterns broke through the source wall and stole secrets and has declared war on all ring wielders as they have failed to safe-guard the universe. Due to a mishap with their Boom Tube
INFINITY MAN AND THE FOREVER PEOPLE #4 need another way back to New Genesis; fortunately Bat Cow helps. In the
SWAMP THING ANNUAL #3 our green hero battles the Demon Etrigan and in
SWAMP THING #35 a new arc, ‘The Machine Queen’ begins, both written by Charles Soule. Out of the DC comic universe and into DC’s TV universe we have THE FLASH: SEASON ZERO #1 and ARROW: SEASON 2.5 #1 and their video game universe has INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US-YEAR TWO ANNUAL #1 as well as INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US-YEAR THREE #1 both written by Tom Taylor. In the ongoing celebration of Batman’s seventy fifth anniversary BATMAN ESSENTIALS offers
BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR SPECIAL EDITION #1, sixty four pages for one dollar. Also the FAIREST IN ALL THE LAND TP which is not a collected edition; this is an original graphic novel featuring short stories by Bill Willingham with a host of cool artists. Many of the Vertigo monthly issues will feature ‘Defy Covers’ covers, which is basically no cover at all; the story begins on the cover! DC DIRECT, home of DC’s collectibles offers their fourth DCU Animated Movies figure line, these from the JUSTICE LEAGUE: THRONE OF ATLANTIS film featuring AQUAMAN, MERA, BLACK MANTA and OCEAN MASTER AF priced at twenty bucks each and the third series of the DESIGNER ACTION FIGURES by GREG CAPULLO featuring ZERO YEAR BATMAN, BATGIRL, TWO-FACE and COMMISSIONER GORDON. Last month I mentioned that DC has joined forces with Graphitti to produce some gallery editions, where they photograph the original art in its original size. Last month they offered a ten issue run of Batman with Kelley Jones’ art and this month they offer the FRANK MILLER’S RONIN-GALLERY EDITION HC, the whole six issue series, gate folds and all, 13″ X 20″ for under two hundred bucks.

IDW: These folks just love to mash up their various properties and this month they offer TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES/GHOSTBUSTERS #1 OF 4 co-written by the writers of both series with art by Dan Shoening. Also offered is the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES LEGENDS: SOUL’S WINTER BY MICHAEL ZULLI collecting this psychological trilogy in an oversized hardcover and in color for the first time. The hit video game and toy sensation gets it’s own comic with SKYLANDERS #1 OF 5 and they also offer SKYLANDERS: THE KAOS TRAP HC collecting the first three issues plus a zero issue that was previously only available at SDCC. Another new licensed property brings EDWARD SCISSORHANDS #1 of 5 to comics, written by New York Times best selling author Kate Leth with art by Drew Rausch. The one shot tie in to the cross over this month is CARTOON NETWORK-SUPER SECRET CRISIS WAR: COW & CHICKEN #1, the ANGRY BIRDS COMICS, VOL. 1: WELCOME TO THE FLOCK HC collects the first four issues for ten bucks and the MY LITTLE PONY OMNIBUS, VOL. 1 collects the first twelve issues for twenty five. The final collection of Joe Hill’s chilling horror series, LOCKE & KEY, VOL. 6: ALPHA & OMEGA TP is also available in a slipcase set with all six volumes for a hundred bucks. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: LEGENDS OF BALDUR’S GATE #1 is written by Jim Zub with Max Dunbar’s art, tying into the video game. THE OCTOBER FACTION #1 tells the adventures of a retired monster hunter and his bizarre family, written by Steve Niles with art by Damien Worm. The gallery edition this month is JOE KUBERT-ENEMY ACE: ARTIST’S EDITION with five stories from Star Spangled War Stories plus extras. HERO COMICS 2014 is a one shot benefit comic with all proceeds to go to the Hero Initiative and it has a new Maxx story by Sam Kieth (the first new one in almost twenty years), a new Jon Sable tale from Mike Grell and more. The KILLOGY HALLOWEEN SPECIAL is also a one shot, by Alan Robert and starring Doyle, formerly of the Misfits. John Byrne continues his sequels to classic episodes by manipulating the original film file, this month offering STAR TREK-NEW VISION: CRY VENGEANCE with a sequel to ‘The Doomsday Machine’ episode as well as ‘Robot’, an original tale. The BLACK DYNAMITE TP collects the current four issue series as well as the previous ‘Slave Island’ one shot. The NELVANA OF THE NORTHERN LIGHTS HC collects all of these Canadian comics from the early forties, tales of a female hero that predated Wonder Woman. The CREEPLE PEEPLE one shot is a tale based on the metal casting molds from Mattel’s toy line. THE LAST UNICORN TP collects the comic adaptation of the classic novel by Peter S. Beagle.

IMAGE: A lot of candidates this month but I have to say that my Pick of the Month for August is WYTCHES #1 written by Scott Snyder with art by Jock, the first issue is thirty pages of horror with no ads for under three bucks. Of course Image isn’t content to just give us one new awesome book per month; they also offer RASPUTIN #1 from Alex Grecian and Riley Rossmo, chronicling the untold tale of this historic figure who was poisoned, drowned, beaten, stabbed, shot in the head, tied up and thrown in a frozen river all in one night, apparently to no avail. BIRTHRIGHT #1 is written by Josh Williamson with beautifully detailed art by Andrei Bressan, telling of a family’s tragic experience of losing a child and the larger tragedy of his return. PUNKS: THE COMIC #1 is a return to the cult hit comedy by Joshua Hale Fialkov with the art of Kody Chamberlain; it’s funny and there is bleeding and sadness: Morrissey would likely approve. GONERS #1 is by Jacob Semahn with Jorge Corona’s art, a small town paranormal story with children in the middle. CUTTER #1 through #4 is a weekly horror series about the kid everyone picked in the schoolyard returning from the dead for vengeance, written by Robert Napton and Seamus Kevin Fahey with art by Christian Dibari. After a long hiatus S. Steven Struble and Sina Grace return to THE LI’L DEPRESSED BOY: SUPPOSED TO BE THERE TOO #1. James Harvey writes and illustrates the one shot, MASTERPLASTY, a cult online classic about a medical technique which drastically modifies the physical appearance in ways both beautiful and hideous. The EAST OF WEST: THE WORLD is a one shot, part atlas, part encyclopedia, part time line and part apocrypha containing pivotal plot and character info that will not be in the regular series. (If you subscribe to the regular series I’ll be sure to put a copy in your file.) The CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2014 is a benefit for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and features lots of luminary creators as usual and the THOUGHT BUBBLE ANTHOLOGY 2014 benefits Barnardo’s, one of the largest children’s charities in the UK and also features lots of great creators, this one in a tabloid format each year. The BLACKHAND COMICS HC gathers three tales by Wes (Deadly Class) Craig. Collected editions include CASANOVA, VOL. 1: LUXURIA-THE COMPLETE EDITION by Matt Fraction and Gabriel Bá, C.O.W.L., VOL. 1: PRINCIPLES OF POWER TP for ten bucks, MORNING GLORIES: DELUXE EDITION, VOL. 3 HC, NAILBITER, VOL. 1: THERE WILL BE BLOOD TP for ten bucks, PETER PANZERFAUST, VOL. 2: DELUXE HC, STRAY BULLETS, VOL. 1: INNOCENCE OF NIHILISM TP collecting the first seven issue tale from the original series, TALES OF HONOR: ON BASILISK STATION, VOL. 1 TP, THIEF OF THIEVES, VOL. 4 TP and the WALKING DEAD: ALL OUT WAR AP EDITION HC, ‘AP’ standing for Artist’s Proof, featuring the whole twelve issue story as seen through Charlie Adlard’s raw pencils. It seems that each publisher has a different name for this format; IDW started it and calls them Artists Editions, DC is calling them Gallery Editions’ and apparently Image is calling the Artists Proofs.

MARVEL: Last month I mentioned a new, but classified cross over series hot on the heels of Original Sin but since then Marvel has canceled all of those orders and they’re starting that series again with a bit more information, a new logo that’s hard to decipher and lots more issues. The main series is AVENGERS & X-MEN: AXIS #1 of 9 written by Rick Remender with Adam Kubert’s art and sub-titled ‘Act One: The Red Supremacy’ involving the Red Skull and his S-Men and his Genoshian Reeducation Camps. AXIS: CARNAGE #1 of 3 is written by Rick Spears with the art of German Peralta, AXIS: HOBGOBLIN #1 of 3 is written by Kevin Shinick with Javier Rodriguez’ art and AXIS: REVOLUTIONS #1 of 4 is by Dennis Hopeless with Ken Lashley’s art. Tie ins this month include UNCANNY AVENGERS #25, DEADPOOL #36, MAGNETO #11, LOKI: AGENT OF ASGARD #7 and ALL-NEW X-FACTOR #15. CAPTAIN AMERICA #25 is an extra sized issue revealing who the all new Captain is, written by Rick Remender with art by Carlos Pacheco and this issue also concludes the Dimension Z story and tells the final fate of Jet Black. DEATH OF WOLVERINE: THE LOGAN LEGACY #1 of 7 will be solo adventures featuring people important in Logan’s life: X-23, Sabretooth, Daken, Lady Deathstrike and Mystique. NIGHTCRAWLER #7 will also tie in to the ‘Death of Wolverine’ story line as will the one shot DEATH OF WOLVERINE: DEADPOOL & CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 by Gerry Duggan and Scott Kolins and STORM #4. A new ongoing series is BUCKY BARNES: THE WINTER SOLDIER #1 by Ales Kot with Marco Rudy’s artwork picking up on the heels of Original Sin. Another new series begins with DEATHLOK #1 written by Nathan Edmondson with art by Mike Perkins, a good creative team should make this one strong. THANOS: A GOD UP THERE LISTENING #1 of 4 is a weekly series picking up after the Infinity cross over, written by Rob Williams with art by Neil Edwards, Paco Diaz and Iban Coello. GUARDIANS 3000 #1 is written by Dan Abnett with art by Gerardo Sandoval, featuring the original team, Vance Astro, Yondu, Martinex, Starhawk and Charlie-27 battling the Badoon to save the future universe. (I don’t expect that they’ll run into the Justice League 3000.) Last month was offered the extra sized Thor: God of Thunder #25 and this month is offered THOR #1, still written by Jason Aaron with art by Russell Dauterman and this is the the introduction of the new Goddess of Thunder. There’s a tag line you might have seen, ‘in seven months…time runs out’ and I’m guessing that it has something to do with all of the time anomalies and paradoxes currently driving a lot of the story lines; anyway, NEW AVENGERS #25 is sporting that tag line, as does AVENGERS #36 and #37. And just when you thought it was all over; the ORIGINAL SIN ANNUAL #1 suggests that, maybe not. No information on content or creators for the solicitation; just the tag line ‘Everybody has one…’. It appears that all of the web slingers titles have some tenuous connection to ‘Edge of Spider-Verse’ including AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #7 and #8, EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #4 and #5 of 5 and SPIDER-MAN 2099 #4 and #5. And SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN #16 shows the series is still not canceled. The MARVEL 75th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION #1 is a fifty six page one shot with all new content by some great creators like Bruce Timm, James Robinson, Len Wein, Brian Michael Bendis, Chris Samnee and more. (It was Timely Comics that began seventy five years ago; Marvel began in 1961, but this still looks like a fun book.) HAWKEYE VS DEADPOOL #1 of 4 is written by Gerry Duggan with art by Matteo Lolli, a Halloween story. NOVA #22 is also a Halloween tale as Nova joins the Jean Grey School for trick-or-treating; it’s okay, Beast is chaperoning. ALL NEW GHOST RIDER #8 features a battle between the ‘new guy’ and Johnny Blaze. CYCLOPS #6 begins a new arc still with Greg Rucka as the writer with new series artist Javier Garron. DEADPOOL’S ART OF WAR #1 of 4 is written by Peter David with art by Scott Koblish as our nutjob hero rips off Sun Tzu’s original instructions on military strategy and tactics. Under the creator owned ICON imprint Jason (Southern Bastards) Aaron and Ron Garney launch MEN OF WRATH #1 of 5, the tale of a Southern family whose heritage is violence. Collected editions in hard cover this month include: STAR WARS: THE ORIGINAL MARVEL YEARS OMNIBUS HC collecting their adaptation of A New Hope followed by the rest of the forty four issue series plus the one Annual; the series culminated with their adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back. The ORIGINAL SIN HC collects issues zero through eight plus the Original Sins series issues one through five. Peter Steigerwald writes and illustrates his new series THE ZOOHUNTERS #1 of 6 from ASPEN, a father teaching his son to follow in his footsteps, capturing animals for zoos on alien worlds.
