The April Previews catalog features listings for all of the comics and related products that will arrive in stores beginning in June. As usual I’ve read it cover to cover and, to spare you from doing the same I will again try to break the five hundred plus pages down to a hopefully more manageable ten or twelve pages.
Some of the codes and abbreviations that I use are HC (hard cover), TP (trade paperback), SC (soft cover), GN (graphic novel), AF (action figure) T/S (tee shirt) and ☼ (an excellent writer or creator or title deserving wider recognition in my humble opinion). Here are the top creators along with their current projects, creations and titles:
AARON: Jason is releasing the final issue of his brilliant tale of reservation life after the introduction of casinos in SCALPED #60 and the previous arc is collected in the SCALPED TP VOLUME 9, all illustrated by R. M. Guera. Jason will be writing WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #12 with Chris Bachalo’s art and INCREDIBLE HULK #9 and #10 with Steve Dillon’s pencils; Jason’s earlier stories are collected in the INCREDIBLE HULK BY JASON AARON HC VOLUME 1. ABNETT/LANNING: Dan and Andy write RESURRECTION MAN #10 at DC with Jesus Saiz’s art and the ‘Unknown Soldier’ story in GI COMBAT #10 and NEW MUTANTS #44 at Marvel with the art of Carmine Di Giandomenico. At Vertigo Dan writes the NEW DEADWARDIANS #4 OF 8 with I. N. J. Culbard and Andy inks Phil Jimenez’s pencils on FAIREST #4. The art by this team in the first issue was remarkable.
AGUIRRE-SACASA: Now that the entire story has been adapted to comics, Roberto’s fine work is offered as the STAND OMNIBUS HC SLIPCASE, a deluxe edition of the adaptation of Stephen King’s novel with Mike Perkins’ faithful artwork throughout. I’ve read the original novel at least five times (in both versions) and I really didn’t expect the comics to hold any interest for me, just because I’m so familiar with the story but I have to say they did a brilliant job; the pacing was so breakneck that I enjoyed it immensely.
ARAGONÉS: IDW is offering ARAGONÉS’ GROO THE WANDERER ARTIST EDITION HC. An ‘Artist Edition’ is made from photographing the original story pages at the original size which gives insight into the artists’ process. At Bongo Sergio writes the ‘Maggie’s Crib’ episode in BART SIMPSON COMICS #72.
ARCUDI: John has been scripting Mike Mignola’s stories in the ‘Hellboy’ universe for years. Recently Mike has added a couple of other co-writers; I think his universe just got to big but John will co-write B.P.R.D.: HELL ON EARTH-DEVIL’S ENGINE #2 OF 3 and the previous arc is collected in the B.P.R.D.: HELL ON EARTH TP VOLUME 3-RUSSIA. John also co-writes the tale being serialized in DARK HORSE PRESENTS #13.

Then Brian writes BEFORE WATCHMEN: COMEDIAN #1 OF 6 illustrated by J.G. Jones. Each issue of ‘Before Watchmen’ will feature a back up feature written by original ‘Swamp Thing’ creator, Len Wein and illustrated by John Higgins.

Cullen co-wrote the ‘Captain America & Bucky’ series with Ed Brubaker and now he writes it solo although the title seems to change frequently; this month there are two issues: CAPTAIN AMERICA AND HAWKEYE #632 and CAPTAIN AMERICA AND IRON MAN #633, both with Alessandro Vitti’s artwork. There is a BATMAN: BLACK AND WHITE STATUE based on Darwyn’s art and he’ll provide a cover for ROCKETEER ADVENTURES II: #2 OF 4.

ELLIS: Warren is another of the growing number of creators seduced by the film industry; he’s just announced that the ‘Gravel’ film is moving forward and the man working on it is a trusted friend. Anyway, he still has his hand in a couple of magazines; BLEEDING COOL MAGAZINE #0 will be by Rich Johnston featuring reviews and previews and Warren’s magazine has ‘rebooted’; CLINT 2.0 #2 generally features three or four complete comics by Warren, often the next chapter of his projects that eventually ship from Marvel’s Icon imprint and usually one or two other comics by other creators.
ENNIS: At Marvel Garth is writing FURY MAX #3 with Goran Parlov; I hope it’s half as entertaining as the previous ‘Max’ series about Nick, which has been out of print for a while now. At Avatar Press Garth continues his usual over-the-top bloody horror in STITCHED #6, a series that he made into a film before he made the comic, and DICKS COLOR EDITION #5 which is as offensive and politically incorrect as Garth can manage. Over at Dynamite Entertainment he’s writing SHADOW #3 with artist Aaron Campbell, BOYS #67 with Russell Braun and BOYS TP VOLUME #11: OVER THE HILSS WITH THE SWORDS OF A THOUSAND MEN. Since the John Ostrander series this team hasn’t really gotten established but the current title has been very well received and the interest and the sales figures seem to be increasing steadily.

Also the latest collection of Larry’s work is GI JOE: ROOTS OF RETALIATION TP.
☼HICKMAN: If you read these things then you probably know that Jonathan, along with Nick Spencer are the two writers I’ve been most pleased with of late, especially for their innovative work at Image. Jonathan writes MANHATTAN PROJECTS #4 with artist Nick Pitarra and SECRET #3 with Ryan Bodenheim; check them both out if you haven’t yet. At Marvel, Jonathan has revitalized the first family and, in my opinion has been doing a better job than anyone who has written these characters. This month he has FANTASTIC FOUR #607 with Ron Garney and FF #19 with Nick Dragotta and, collected as FF BY JONATHAN HICKMAN VOLUME 3 PREMIERE HC. Anyway, Rob will co-write and provide the cover for SAVAGE HAWKMAN #10; Mark Poulton will share writing chores and the art will be by Art Thibert and Joe Bennet. Rob writes, pencils and does the cover for DEATHSTROKE #10 as ‘The Search for Lobo’ begins, Rob and Frank Tieri write GRIFTER #10 with Scott Clark providing cover and interiors. ☼SNYDER: Scott continues developing maybe the best nemesis since the Joker in BATMAN #10 with Greg Capullo’s art; the decision to take the caped crusader away from the super hero genre and into Gothic horror with the Court of the Owls has been brilliant. Scott has also been breaking new ground with his work on SWAMP THING #10 with Francesco Francavilla’s (!) art; after Alan Moore’s stellar work I didn’t expect this level of enthusiasm for this title again. This issue begins a new arc and features the return of Anton Arcane. At Vertigo he writes AMERICAN VAMPIRE #28 with Rafael Albuquerque and AMERICAN VAMPIRE: LORD OF NIGHTMARES #1 OF 5 with Dustin Nguyen expands on this series which tie in to America’s history in a fascinating way, allowing for a variety of stories and settings, this one set in post war Europe.
SPENCER: ☼MORNING GLORIES #21 and MORNING GLORIES TP VOLUME 3: P.E. feature the art of Joe Eisma; this has been my favorite comic for quite a while now although I’m still as much in the dark about what’s going on as anyone. ☼THIEF OF THIEVES #5, co-created and co-written by Robert Kirkman with art by Shawn Martinbrough is another title with a lot of promise and intrigue. Nick also writes ULTIMATE COMICS: X-MEN #13 with the art of Carlo Barbieri.
SPURRIER: Simon’s recent limited series is collected in the X-MEN: X-CLUB TP with Paul Davidson’s art; Simon also writes EXTERMINATION #1, a new series with an introductory price of one dollar for the first issue about Earth’s super heroes and villains teaming up to try and take back a defeated planet after an alien invasion.
STRACZYNSKI: Joe Michael writes BEFORE WATCHMEN: NITE OWL #1 OF 4 with artist Andy Kubert and, like all the ‘Before Watchmen’ titles there will be a back up story by Len Wein. The WONDER WOMAN: ODYSSEY VOLUME 1 TP has Joe’s stories plus the one by Phil Hester with art by Don Kramer and Eduardo Pansica. And from Marvel (a couple years late) comes the TWELVE PREMIER VOLUME 2 with Chris Weston’s art; Marvel neglected to state whether this is a hard cover or TP but at twenty five bucks I’m going to assume that it’s a HC.
SWIERCZYNSKI: Duane writes BIRDS OF PREY #10 with Travel Foreman’s art at DC where Black Canary learns something amazing about her powers and GODZILLA ONGOING #2 at IDW with Simon Gane’s art. Duane and Chris Ryall wrote material collected in the INFESTATION 2 TP VOLUME 1 with art by Alan Robinson.

VanSCIVER: Ethan co-writes FURY OF FIRESTORM: THE NUCLEAR MEN #10 with Joe Harris and the art is by Yildiray Cinar and Norm Rapmund.
VAUGHAN: Brian is only writing one comic, but it’s an exceptionally good one! I hyped the first issue sight unseen and ordered what I thought were too many copies but it sold out here and apparently everywhere else on the day it arrived and was offered as a second printing on the same day. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. ☼SAGA #4 with the art of Fiona Staples; a universe spanning space adventure with a controversial cross species romance and a high level of intrigue which, based on his previous works (‘Y: The Last Man’, ‘Ex Machina’) is to be expected.
WAGNER: Matt writes and provides cover art for the conclusion of ZORRO RIDES AGAIN #12 OF 12 with interior art by John K. Snyder who was working with Matt many years ago on his epic ‘Grendel’ series. He also writes one of the short tales in ROCKETEER ADVENTURES II: #4 OF 6.

WILLIAMS: J. H. co-writes BATWOMAN #10 with Haden Blackman and the art is by Amy Reeder-Hadley inked by Rob Hunter; in this penultimate chapter of ‘To Drown the World’ our hero is ambushed by Killer Croc.
WINICK: Judd writes BATWING #10 with art by Marcus To and inker Ryan Winn; the first arc is collected as BATWING TP VOLUME 1: THE LOST KINGDOM with Ben Oliver illustrating. Judd also writes CATWOMAN #10 with Guillem March’s art introducing ‘Dollhouse’, a psychotic who kidnaps children.
WOLFMAN: Marv writes NIGHT FORCE #4 OF 7 with Tom Mandrake’s art; yes, it was originally a six part series.
WOOD: Brian begins a new series at Dark Horse: ☼MASSIVE #1 with Kristian Donaldson’s art, a post-apocalyptic search for an environmental action ship lost at sea, posing the question of the validity of environmentalism after the planet has already been destroyed. There’s the list of over one hundred creators for this month; if I’m skipping any of your personal favorites please let me know and I’ll be happy to add them! Now I will go through the publishers and tell you what new projects they’re launching and note anything that wasn’t covered in the above list.
DARK HORSE: FATIMA: THE BLOOD SPINNERS #1 is a new ongoing series created, written and illustrated by ‘Beto Hernandez of ‘Love & Rockets’ fame and features a popular drug, ‘Spin’ which supplies a great high but unfortunately the side effects turn the users into flesh eating zombies. DARK HORSE PRESENTS #10 has a story by Kelly Sue DeConnick with Phil Noto’s artwork resurrecting the Dark Horse character, ‘Ghost’ and also has John (‘Chew’) Layman writing an ‘Aliens’ tale. A limited series spinning out of the ‘Buffy-verse’, BTVS: DRUSILLA #1 OF 5 is written by actress Juliet Landau with art by Cliff Richards. An original graphic novel written by Bo Hampton and Robert Tinnell with Bo’s beautiful painted art, RIVEN TP, is the tale of a girl who awakes from a five year coma as a beautiful teenager with unusual desires that become more intense with the waxing of the moon. (While I like the creators of both of these series I sure am getting weary of zombies, vampires and werewolves.) STAR WARS: KNIGHT ERRANT-ESCAPE #1 OF 5 will be written by John Jackson Miller with the art of Marco Castiello and Vincenzo Acunzo and these collections are offered: STAR WARS OMNIBUS: CLONE WARS VOLUME 1: REPUBLIC WAR TP, combining four TPs plus extras and STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS-SITH HUNTERS TP, one of the digest sized young readers books. The EMPOWERED: DELUXE EDITION HC: VOLUME 2 will be limited to one printing, collecting volumes four, five and six of the soft cover books.
DC: I know that I mentioned all of the BEFORE WATCHMEN series offered this month as DC has done a great job of picking the creators who are qualified to write prequels to maybe the best comic ever written. Each issue will have a CRIMSON CORSAIR back up story written by Len Wein with art by John Higgins, a very talented artist who provided the colors for the original ‘Watchmen’ comic. Joshua Williamson starts the new arc in VOODOO #10 with Sam Basri’s art and Howard Mackie writes RAVAGERS #2 with Ian Churchill illustrating. DC NATION #1 is an all age one shot, a tie in to the animated adventures on Cartoon Network and will feature Green Lantern, Plastic Man and features posters and exclusive pictures. DC DIRECT offers the JUST US LEAGUE SERIES 1 AF ASSORTMENT; these are silly versions of the Justice League all depicted as Alfred E. Neuman. The figures offered are AQUAMAN, GREEN ARROW and SUPERMAN.
IDW: When I was telling you about what Keith Giffen is doing this month I mentioned the MARS ATTACKS CLASSICS TP VOLUME 1 and the new MARS ATTACKS #1; I neglected to mention the MARS ATTACKS BOXED SET which contains the whole Topps 55 issue comic series for two hundred bucks. It also includes a 56th cover that is only available as part of this set. The DAVE STEVENS STORIES & COVERS HC puts all of his non Rocketeer work under one cover. KISS #1 is written by Chris Ryall with art by Jamal Igle and, hey, it’s KISS #1 so it needs no further explanation. Also offered is the KISS GREATEST HITS TP VOLUME 1 gathering both of the stories from the ‘Marvel Super Specials’ magazines. The DANGER GIRL: REVOLVER TP collects the recent limited series by creator Andy Hartnell with Chris Madden’s art. While the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #11 is due there’s also the TMNT COLOR CLASSICS #2 as well as a TMNT MICRO-SERIES #5: SPLINTER one shot expanding the original four issue reboot. The CONVENTION SKETCHBOOK HC is a book of blank pages of paper of the same quality as a hard cover graphic novel for twenty bucks.
IMAGE: SPAWN #220 celebrates the return of Todd McFarlane to writing and cover art chores, Simon Kudranski remains the interior artist, of course there are variant covers galore as well as a limited black and white 20th Anniversary edition. PLANETOID #1 is the adventures of an ex-soldier turned space pirate and it’s created, written and illustrated by Ken Garing. There was a three issue series, then a two issue ‘origin’ series and now the story continues in CARBON GREY VOLUME 2 #1 OF 3, definitely for mature readers, the artwork is simply incredible; if you missed the earlier issues mention it next time you visit so I can show you the first series’ TP; it will knock your socks off. Frank Cho has finally collected his color strips in the LIBERTY MEADOWS SUNDAY COLLECTION: BOOK 1 HC; this and the second volume due in November will put his five years of work in one (okay, two) place(s) and will include new and never before seen material. Justin Jordan, creator of ‘The Strange Talent of Luther Strode’ is the guest writer for the current arc in HACK/SLASH #17.
MARVEL: Neil Edwards will illustrate AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: THE MOVIE #1 and #2 written by Tom Cohen and scheduled to arrive near the fourth of July when the file premieres, it’s also offered as the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: THE MOVIE TP. AMAZING FANTASY #15: SPIDER-MAN reprints the original story from 1962 as well as the first issue from 1963. J.M. DeMatteis writes the MIGHTY THOR ANNUAL #1 with Richard Elson’s art, with our hero caught between Galactus and Silver Surfer. INFERNAL MAN-THING #1 OF 3 is creator Steve Gerber’s ‘final Man-Thing story’ is illustrated by Kevin Nowlan(!). The UNTOLD TALES OF THE PUNISHER MAX #1 OF 5 will be written by award winning crime novelist Jason Star with art by Roland Boschi and, although it says ‘one of five’ it also says ’48 page one-shot’ so I guess we’ll have to wait and see. The MARVEL ZOMNIBUS HC is a 1200 page collection of most every comic ever featuring the successful undead franchise.

FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS is delving into the EC comics archives and offering CAME THE DAWN AND OTHER STORIES, a collection of Wally Wood’s best and CORPSE OF THE IMJINI AND OTHER STORIES, a collection of Harvey Kurtzman’s best, both in hard cover. I’m quite excited that they’ve decided to bring back into print ☼JACK JACKSON’S AMERICAN HISTORY: LOST TEJANOS AND LOST CAUSE, the first being the tale of the Texas-Mexican war (1835-1875) and the second chronicles the violent reaction to Reconstruction by Texans. The late creator is credited with creating the first ‘underground’ comic (God Nose) and co-founding Rip-Off Press in 1969 but his many comics documenting the history of the southwest is his great legacy. ONI PRESS has wisely tapped the writing team of Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir for BAD MEDICINE #1 and #2 OF 2, a medical crime thriller in NYC with Christopher Mitten’s art. Over at RED 5 COMICS their best series has now gone monthly with ATOMIC ROBO: REAL SCIENCE ADVENTURES #1 but apparently that’s not enough; they’re also launching ATOMIC ROBO AND THE FLYING SHE-DEVILS OF THE PACIFIC #1 OF 5 by creator Brian Clevinger.
